I remember my first Thanksgiving in England.  I had this big pan for the turkey that I had bought in the states.  It didn't fit in the oven.  I couldn't believe how small the oven was.  We ended up with a turkey joint instead of a full turkey.

How long ago was that? I remember reading this story on here lol

we chose Thanksgiving over Christmas  to  to go to the US..less stress  I think..Plus DD will celebrate her 2nd B-day there and most my family will meet her for the first time.. I expect tears all around..  ;)  We are spliting our time between CA and AZ and just hope I get to see as many people as possible.. just hoping the flight isn't a nightmare..

They have the onion thingys here. They're in the grocery store salad stuff section.

Soooo disappointed I can't find them anywhere up here... it's a total conspiracy!!!  I asked at Sainsbury's, but they don't carry them at our location...   :-\\\\

maybe I will find some before the holiday somewhere, probably at Tesco's but that is so far away for us ... there aren't any Waitrose's or anything around here, either...

But Thanksgiving will go on!!!!  I am adding Yorkshires this year, just to change it up a bit, and even though I don't like pumpkin pie, I am making one for DH who has never tried it.  I have to try a pecan pie, too.  It's my favorite, and yet I have never made one.  Probably because my sweet grandma makes one for me every year... I will miss her so much this year!!   :\\\'(

If you can't find the onion thingys (I've not seen them before either but then I've not looked), maybe a nice UKY person somewhere would volunteer to send you some?  :)

If you are anywhere near a Booths (more of a northern based store I think?), they usually have the canned pumpkin as well.  I think I would sooner improvise using what's available here, than have someone in the US spend a lot of money shipping heavy stuff like tins, etc.  I am pretty sure someone posted some kind of green bean casserole recipe as well in the past!

You have just solved my wondering where I can get supplies to cook Thanksgiving dinner at the cottage we're staying at in Keswick!

Cool!  It says the Keswick one is their largest store.  Booths is really a nice store - kind of along the lines of Waitrose.  :)

When we were in the UK, we tried to make Thanksgiving an event, even though it meant having it on the following Sunday because of work and school.  The saddest thing was not having any other family around to share the feast. I couple of times we got together with another US/UK couple and kids, which was OK.  When the kids got older I invited two American students from the University to join us.  That was interesting, but of course they weren't able to bring food.

you may struggle to find karo syrup if you make pecan pie. only howells sells it as far as i know.

You can sub Karo for golden Syrup- but do cook your pie a bit less time and at a bit lower temperature from your American recipes.  I found that it worked great this way :P- BUT- if you don't make the adjustments- by day 2, your pie will be as hard as peanut brittle!!!
love is a many splendid thing...
