In my family we just pick the bread the night before. I remember growing up seeing my mom and aunt sitting and chatting with a bowl in each of their laps, picking bread. I actually pick bread and use it fresh sometimes because I kind of like the smooth texture that makes. We don't have anything in our stuffing except for onion soup mix, poultry mix, butter, and egg.

No canned pumpkin in Harrogate Morrisons tonight.   :(

You need to check at Waitrose for canned Libbys pumpkin, or if they don't have it - try Booths in Ilkley.  (I can ask my Ilkley friend to check first!)

My grandmother's stuffing recipe is easy peasy and I LOVE it.

A mix of white and brown bread, cubed or torn and left out overnight to dry.
Sautee celery and onion and sage to taste. Add pepper but hold on the salt as the chicken stock should be salty enough.

Mix bread cubes with onion and celery in a big bowl then press into a 9x12 pan. Pour chicken stock over the mixture. If you like it very moist, use a lot, if you like it dryer, use less. I think I use about 4-5 cups as I like it moist ont he bottom but cruncy on top. Bake in oven at 350 for about 45 minutes.

I seem to remember that Budgens (in London anyway)last year had cans of pumpkin and some other stuff.  Isn't there a Budgens in York?  ???

One more delicious recipe to share.   :)
Baked Pumpkin
1 small pumpkin
2 chopped apples
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
(optional: 1/2 cup cranberries)
Preheat oven to 350*  Wash pumpkin, dry and cut off top, set aside for later.  Scoop out strings & seeds.  
Combine all ingredients except butter, mix well.  Pour into pumpkin and dot with butter.  Put top on, place pumpkin on a baking sheet, bake for 75-90mins.  
When pumpkin has cooled enough to eat, scoop out filling and some pumpkin 'meat' into dessert dishes.  Can be served with ice cream.

I didn't have the patience to go through all 23 pages, so please forgive me if someone already asked this and it has been answered. I have only been here three months and I find the grocery store to be a complete nightmare when it comes to find any kind of specialty ingredients.

So, I am wondering if French Fried Onions that I will need to make the topping on the green bean casserole are readily available in the supermarket, also if they are called the same thing here (because God knows nothing else is) and what section of the grocery store I can find them in.

yep.. this has been talked about in this thread and several others over the years!
Crispy fried onions are in a plastic tub with a red lid, near the salad dressings, croutons and Bac-o's... or sometimes in the tinned vegetables section.

You might have better luck than I did since you are in a bigger town, but I didn't find any around here at all.  Some super nice person on the forum sent me some after I whined about not being able to find any anywhere.   :P

Fortunately, DH's birthday is Thanksgiving weekend, and since mom was sending him some pressies, I managed to get a few things for dinner slipped into the box... like tinned pumpkin and other things they didn't have around these here parts. ;D

You could use those, but it wouldn't be exactly the same (is anything, really?)
The thing with those is that they are smaller and much crunchier than the ones in America, which are lightly crispy and bigger, almost curly.
I also find the cream of mushroom soup tastes different to me, I'm probably just missing all that MSG and preservatives of the Campbell's back in the states.   :-X

I've been to the Waitrose in Salisbury and Romsey and neither had canned pumpkin.  I asked the manager in the Romsey store and he said that there was a problem with getting it-and they wouldn't get it until the end of December.   :(
Has anyone had any luck?
