Last year a bunch of us just chose a place that was doing a Christmas menu with turkey.  It worked out fine, although I brought pumpkin pie for everyone to eat at home.
Hmmm -- don't think British Christmas = Thanksgiving. Did they offer Christmas pud. for afters?

This is (probably) going to be my last Thanksgiving at home with my family, and I'm really excited that my fiance (well, by then he'll be my husband) will be here for it.

Anytime I talk about holidays, etc., he spends a lot of time warning me that I might not be able to get things I want/need, like turkey.  I think he's really worried that if I can't have everything exactly 'right' that I'll have some kind of breakdown.

Normally, he'd be correct. :)  I'm kind of a perfectionist/control freak.  But the good thing, I think, is that we never had just one 'right' dinner in our family.  First of all, we always went to at least two different family gatherings.  Second, they were almost always potluck with my extended family, so there were different things every year, and sometimes variations on the same things.  So I've got a really wide, flexible range of 'right.'

That said, I'm glad he'll be here so he can try things, and hopefully be able to give me better suggestions on substitutions, if needed.

They had a choice of 4 starters, 4 mains including turkey and cranberry and four desserts.  So plenty of options and then no dishes.  Plus, houses being the size they are here, I'm not sure all of us would have fit.

Yay!  I was wondering who was going to be the first to start it up this year!  ;D

We're making up missed birthdays this year on Thanksgiving, so there will be turkey, and birthday cake. And pecan pie. Because I really love pecan pie.

I am excited for Turkey day! We are doing an American spread with few new friends and DH just loves Turkey day.  He had his 1st one last year and once we get a real place to eat and bigger house this will be mandatory at ours ;-P

Woohoo!  I'm excited too. ;D I keep trying to explain to the boy how much fun the whole day is, but he just doesn't yet understand why it's such a big deal.  He'll end up a convert though, he already requires ranch dressing to dip his pizza in!

They start carrying turkeys at about mid-November, and bigger stores will have smaller bits of turkeys and stuff if you are not inclined to buy the whole bird! In fact they start carrying a lot of stuff that is neccesary for Christmas/Thanksgiving at about this time - it's easier than you might think to put together a proper Thanksgiving! :D

My husband takes Thanksgiving off every year...this year we're going to plan on still being in the UK and have ordered a turkey through our local butcher.  :)

I had the boy take off Thanksgiving (and the Friday after) when I booked my flight!  I know it's not a big deal for everyone, but I know myself and I'd be depressed if I didn't get to do the whole shebang on Thursday.  We're lucky to have been kindly invited to a couple of festivities this year!   :-*

Thanksgiving is actually my favorite holiday, so I'm thrilled I'll still be able to celebrate it over here.

Me too! Its the day of all day fun as the food always smells lovely...We will connect to figure out the menu of the day ;-) Its something to look forward too and to spend it with people who "get it" ;-).
My DSD asked what thanksgiving was and DH said that is when Americans celebrate conning the indians.

Bahahaha- Well, he and D will get on swimmingly with that sort of humour.  My thought is "Who could dislike a day of watching sports, eating loads, and copious amounts of drink?"  ;D

After being here 13yrs have come to the conclusion I would rather spend the extra money at Christmas time..so it has become a obsolete holiday for me....I do miss it but I think I miss Macy's Parade and all the lead up to it..like Charlie Brown and all that...makes me to homesick I think.....  :-[

I LOVE Thanksgiving!!  But it's the Macy's parade and the football games and lots of family and reading the ads for Black Friday and all those things that made it my favorite.  Here I'll cook a semi-special dinner for the two of us and maybe even bake a pecan pie but that's about it.  Last year I tried to find "The Mouse On The Mayflower" to watch online but no luck.
