I don't normally do recipes on Thanksgiving (I like to keep things simple) but I might do http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2010/09/coming-round-the-mountain/ as it looks pretty darn delicious.  D has insisted on homemade mac and cheese (easy peasy) and my favorite thing is sweet potato mash with caramelized marshmallows.  Nom nom nom...

I blame you for reminding me of these:

http://thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen/recipes/breads/amish-cinnamon-rolls-with-caramel-frosting/

Drool!  I am going to have to make those soon!  (We had an Amish town not far from where I grew up, and yes their cinnamon rolls are to die for.)

Today, I saw ***lurvely*** Le Creuset pie plates (full American size, deep dish ones!) in TK Maxx...there was an all white one and two blue ones...  Can't remember if they were £12 or £16.  Only thing is, I don't really need a pie dish, and I was in town to do other shopping so I didn't indulge my coveting of them.  But I thought I would mention it in case anyone wants a pie dish for Thanksgiving - Le Creuset pie dishes at TK Maxx folks!  (is that a good price?  I didn't think it was too bad - for Le Creuset)

Ok...maybe I'll have to go back...  :P

They're normally £18 but on offer at most cookshops for £12 at the moment for xmas (it's a manufacturer offer) , so £12 is a good price, £16 is a less  good price, but still a saving on RRP :)

I love mine by the way, it's properly deep and made a gorgeous pie yesterday, I got the cream and teal and got a free pie bird :) LOVE the teal, but the new cassis colour is gorgeous too :)

They start carrying turkeys at about mid-November, and bigger stores will have smaller bits of turkeys and stuff if you are not inclined to buy the whole bird! In fact they start carrying a lot of stuff that is neccesary for Christmas/Thanksgiving at about this time - it's easier than you might think to put together a proper Thanksgiving! :D

I think his point is mainly 'not where we'll be living' (the Outer Hebrides).  But I explained that, if necessary, I'd make a special trip to Glasgow for ingredients.  :)

Man I wish we had one here! I want a pie dish in some awesome fall color...

There's a TK Maxx in Newcastle City Centre, Jenn... you could go there and see if they have one of those pie dishes Mrs R mentioned!  :D

Also, La Cookshop in Durham is a stockist for Le Creuset (if TK Maxx doesn't have it there), and cheesebiscuit said they are running a manufacturers special on the pie dishes right now (Le Creuset) anyway!

I must confess I went back to the Leeds TK Maxx yesterday, and two (out of the 3) pie dishes I saw there were gone already!  (or else I just couldn't find them on the shelf anyway, they had been moved)  One white one was gone, and a blue one was gone.  So I had to buy the remaining blue one - it was £12.99.  I also bought a medium-ish Le Creuset casserole dish that was like £8 or £9 too.  (and they had a small casserole for about £5, but I left it)

Suppose I could have stumped over to Peter Maturi (posh cookshop) to see what they had, but I was on my lunch break & it's a bit longer trek over there.

Yup, that's me. :)

I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do out there, either.  But, I'll jump off that bridge when I come to it.

4 people are sending me a care package, told everyone to put a can of pumpkin in there. Though I don't have a pie pan, can use it in other receipes. I'm a student so it's hard to buy all this stuff if I'm not even sure if I'll be staying longer.

I've pretty much decided I'm going to buck tradition and try Nigella's Glazed Christmas Ham (I've been wanting to try that recipe for ages, but don't have a big enough family to make that and a turkey for Christmas, and DH really loves turkey at Christmas...) and some cornbread dressing (you can't really call it stuffing if you aren't stuffing the darn thing, in my opinion!) and maybe try some sort of sweet potato dish (86'ing the marshmallows on top since everyone else thinks its too weird) and then various veg dishes (maybe my best friend's broccoli cheese casserole or corn casserole, or both, because I love her casseroles and I miss her) and definitely either the pumpkin cupcakes with cinnamon cream cheese icing (or maple cream cheese icing) or I may try a pumpkin cheesecake instead.... mmmm. My BFF gave me an awesome recipe for pumpkin struesel pie that I wanted to try, but never got around to. Unfortunately, though, no one else really likes the pumpkin pie because of the squidgy texture, so I will probably hold off on that. I may make some maple pecan squares this year, as well, instead of pecan pie, since I have a great looking recipe I have been meaning to try.  :) Unless I combine them into one awesome pumpkin cheesecake with carmelized pecans on top... oh god. Now we're talking...  ;)

Hi Everyone!

I'm new here!  Came over from Los Angeles in May for love :-)

I started a tradition to have Straysgiving back home, for all the people that couldn't go home to their family and I intend to do the same here in London.  What started as a potluck/gathering has turned into me cooking for 3 days with everything from scratch!  I'm going to show my new brit friends how to stuff themselves silly and give my yank friends the comfort of home.  VERY excited about that.

Here's my menu from last year http://roadmama.wordpress.com/2009/11/23/thanksgiving-first-timer/ [nofollow] which was the first time I cooked an entire meal by myself.  I'm doing the same this year but am worried about finding some of the products.

Turkey - Should I pre-order this?  If so, where can I do so without breaking the bank?  Anyone know of a place that brines the Turkey for you?

Sweetened Condensed Evaporated Milk - forgive me for not looking yet, but is this common?

Unbaked fresh pie shell - Pillsbury had an amazing one I used last year, is this something I can find over here?

Everything else should be easy, I've already spotted pumpkin purée at Whole foods (high street kensington) and Planet Organic (westbourne grove)

P.s. Jewelz - I've never been a pumpkin pie fan, and I made this recipe last year and it was nothing short of amazing.  I couldn't keep my fork off of it, what's thanksgiving without pumpkin pie?!  http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Brown-Familys-Favorite-Pumpkin-Pie/Detail.aspx [nofollow]

Happy early Turkey Day everyone!

I always get my turkey from whole foods, it's free range and organic and normally costs about £35 for a massive one, I don't think you'll find anywhere that brines, but I don't brine anyway (and no my turkey isn't dry, bacon people bacon!) :P :)

You can also get them from waitrose for about £20 or if you want something cheaper you can get a frozen M&S one :)

I get my turkey from my local butcher, just down the street - order it about a week ahead of time.  Well what I order & get is a whole, butterflied boneless turkey breast (it's always huge!)...and put little herb/butter balls down the middle of it, plus wrapping in bacon.  The brining thing doesn't appeal to me at all.

And yes - I want the maple pecan square recipe too!
