Chary, I made Alton Brown's Sweet Corn Bread Pudding (it's really souffle like) and I got nothing but rave reviews for days and I had (British) friends begging me for the recipe

I highly recommend it!

Thanks, L! But is that going to be too similar to cornbread stuffing?

I found it very soufflé or casserole like, rather than like stuffing, as the bread cubes absorb all the egg mixture - but if you're already making cornbread stuffing, it may be overkill - as it does come out cornbready in taste as well

Does anyone now where to get turkeys for Thanksgiving? It seems that all the grocery stores don't carry them until it's closer to Christmas. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I've seen frozen ones at the large Tescos, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons. They take up a lot of space, though, so smaller branches may not have them yet.

Could also potentially order one from a local butcher.  :)

There's also some at Lidl and Aldi, I think.  If you can't find them in your local grocery store, you can try to order online, from say like Tesco direct. Or like NOT says, try your butcher or local farm shop.  I ordered mine last year from a local farm, it was free range and hand plucked and finished and it was just gorgeous!!!

That was my worry - I don't really want two cornbready items on the table (though I, personally, wouldn't mind it!). I think I need a more casserole-y corn casserole.

Send a certain Des Moines/York gal a PM via FB or some such - her 'Grandma's Corn Casserole' brought to our Thanksgiving 3 years running is pretty good, but alas - I don't have the recipe.  I'm sure she wouldn't mind hearing from you about this!  :)

I know it calls for creamed corn - can that be obtained here?  Or a substitution?

I saw some in Morrisons a couple weeks ago. They didn't have a huge selection (at least in my local one) but they had a few already.

Oooh, will do! Thank you!

Excellent. I was wondering about that. I've never actually looked for it before - other than in corn casserole, it's not really something I like much.

I'm going to be missing Thanksgiving this year! The first one in my entire life. ): Its just not logical to spend a lot on getting the things needed to make a Thanksgiving dinner, and we're on a tight budget.

I guess its going to be just me living vicariously through the posts my friends make about their amazing holiday, and wishing I was able to spend it with them!

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving on here, though! (:

Perhaps you can buy the ingredients to make one fave special dish, or a small treat for the day. Being on a tight budget on special days is no fun, but I have found in the past that one small thing can help greatly psychologically. It won't be the same as a full overloaded table but it will be something from home if you are able to do it.

We're on a pretty tight budget at the moment too, but I am planning a meal of a few things on another night, because MIL is taking us to a carvery on the actual day, and I know they won't have green bean casserole and I HAVE to have grandma's sage and onion stuffing, so we will have those another night, with baked chicken, since hubby doesn't care for turkey and I will get to have it at the carvery.

That's a good idea! The things I guess I'd be most missing, is the sweet potato casserole and the Turkey with Stove Top stuffing! I know its not home made, but I LOVE that stuff! lol. I'll also be missing all the great pies/cakes like the Pumpkin pie and pumpkin roll! I Made both on my own from scratch with a real pumpkin a few weeks ago, and to my suprise it turned out amazingly! (Its amazing how well you can do, out of desperation, and determination.) but sadly enough everywhere my husband and I have looked, has been sold out of pumpkins! :( Maybe I can talk him into buying the Libbys canned Pumpkin from online! Cause I don't think I can live through a Thanksgiving without a Pumpkin Pie or Pumpkin Roll! its just so damned expensive, talking like 2.30 a can! Thanks for the idea, though!
