Going to the Highlands?
« on: September 16, 2007, 08:38:54 PM »
We're thinking of taking the West Highland Railway from Glasgow to Fort William and maybe stay there and take the steam train to Mallaig for the day.

Is anyone familiar with this area?  I am no walker or hiker I just want to go for the views and atmosphere.  I like the idea of staying in Glen Coe rather than Fort William because it seems to be smaller and a bit out of the way.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, I'd welcome them all!  It's hard to judge based on travel guides.
had a bit of a wobble.

we drove all the way to Fort Williams once a few yrs ago. I don't have any info though as it was a mad quick trip around.  It rained A LOT and we didn't do much walking.  It was beautiful though!

Gorgeous area. Can't wait to visit it again. I don't know if you'll be able to get there without a car, but we stayed at a great B&B north of Fort William, in Spean Bridge. Gourmet food and wine, fabulous views and walking, lovely people.

Fort William is pretty small (around 10,000). It is a beautiful area. I am sure you will love the views. With a bit of luck, the hills will be alight with bright purple. I once found Glen Coe shrouded in a ground fog and it was the most eerie hike I have ever had. Gave me goosebumps. Been to this area a few times and I really can't understand why I haven't been back in recent years. Maybe because Caledonia has outstanding beauty and atmosphere everywhere.

I think you'd need a car if you were heading to Glen Coe. Bus service should be available. It has been nearly 30 years since I was down that way.

Have fun
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.
