tip the movers?
« on: September 16, 2007, 09:36:09 PM »
Our 20' container is being delivered on Wed and i'm wondering if we need to tip the movers. We're likely to have to shell out 470GBP already for a shuttle service due to lack of parking and bad access to our house. That on top of the $7200 we have already paid does not leave me wanting to creep the price up anymore. I'm just wondering what is proper in these situations.

1) tip?
2) how much?

thanks!

We did, £10 to each guy.  But honestly I don't think it's necessary.  Most people don't here.  Especially as you have to pay £470 for the shuttle service, OY!

I tipped £10 for 2 guys, but they were only in the flat about 10 minutes removing some old furniture. If it's nothing complicated, I usually tip how much I think a couple of sandwiches would cost.

I've always tipped movers, but a co-worker once told me he never did because the movers *always* mess something up. And ya know what? He was right. When I stuff was packed in the U.S., we tipped the workers with actual cash, something like $20 each, and bought lunch for a four-man crew two days in a row. And when we unpacked we discovered they did an awful job. The ones moving you in aren't responsible for most of the damage, as it was done by the packers, but the ones on this end didn't reassemble things the other movers had disassembled. We had them come back and put together what could be done, but the movers in the U.S. had not packed well and many parts needed for reassembly were just gone. Urgh, I'm mad thinking about it!

My new rule is this: No cash tips anymore unless you're *sure* someone did an excellent job and went above and beyond (which is hard to tell -- our U.S. movers seemed to be working hard, but they did a terrible job which we didn't realize until we unpacked).

Instead, buy a lunch for the crew and offer bottled water and sodas. And leave it at that. That's still a good tip and a thoughtful thing to do, and you won't kick yourself so hard later when you see they've scraped the floor or wall of dragging something in, etc, because at least you didn't hand them cash, too.

I didn't even think about tipping the guys who came to pack and take my stuff (and glad as they took a bag they weren't supposed to), and also hadn't thought of tipping the folks who deliver it ???
For me though, I'm having them just stick the boxes in a garage initially, so not only will they not be doing any unpacking, but I won't know until later if any damage has been done.
Great.  One more thing to worry about!

Husband tipped them each £10.  We had to go to an ATM to get it while they were working though! (Um, when I say 'we' I mean 'husband'.)  They were very nice and we chatted with them throughout.   I hope the unpackers are just as helpful.
