This is a map of where the Ashmolean in Oxford is:

http://www.multimap.com/maps/?&hloc=GB|OX12PH#t=l&map=51.75553,-1.26045|16|4&loc=GB:51.75553:-1.26045:16|OX12PH|OX1%202PH

Go to www.nationalrail.co.uk and put in that you want to get from London (all stations) to Oxford and you want to arrive by whatever time you think you need to be there, and it will give you the trains and what London rail stations they leave from.  As meggles said above, they do probably all leave from Paddington, which means you can take the Hammersmith & City tube line from Kings Cross to Paddington.

The Oxford "tube" has nothing really to do with where you're going.

Is there an easy way to buy my tickets in person? These websites are so incredibly confusing that I'm starting to feel like an idiot, and I am by no means an un-web-savvy person.  I keep getting the response that the trains are fully booked or something. This is very frustrating and I have a feeling it really should be easy.

You should be able to buy your tickets when you arrive in Paddington.  Just remember, it won't be "cheap" because you'll be travelling at peak time, to arrive in Oxford for something that begins at 9.45am.

If you check on the National Rail website, it will tell you what tickets are available for what time trains.

Good luck.

I do keep checking the national rail website but every time I go to actually buy the tickets, I get this response:

Quote

Sorry - we have been unable to succesfully validate your journey for one of the following reasons:

   1. The train is fully booked.

   2. The compulsory reservation required is unavailable.

   3. The connection to the National Reservation System is unavailable.

   4. The train may be closed for reservations.

Please go back to step 2 of 7 and select a different ticket type or date of travel. Alternatively call us on xxx (or +44 (xxx from overseas) where an agent will be happy to help with your enquiry.

I have tried numerous combinations of ticket times and none of them have actually processed through to allow me to buy the tickets. I'd be more than happy to actually go down to Paddington right now and purchase the tickets there for tomorrow, I don't necessarily have to do it all tomorrow morning. It's just getting very frustrating :(

According to the map, it doesn't look "that" far - but maybe call up The Ashmolean and ask someone there, who would be more familiar with the distances.  There may be a bus, or they may advise a taxi.

Google maps shows it as being about 7 miles apart. Coming from a driving city, I really have little experience with walking and I don't know how far that really is to actually walk. I also want to be sure I "save my strength" for the tours, as they are all walking tours so I will be walking all day long. It looks like there is a bus that goes to the city centre, so I think that will work out best. Or at the very worst, a taxi will work.

Thank you so much for your help, peedal! I just get very nervous about getting lost!

The average person walks at a speed of about 3 miles an hour - so if it is 7 miles, that's over 2 hours of walking - so if you can find one, a bus will be much quicker!!

However, the Ashmolean website says that the museum is approximately 10 minutes walk from the train station.
Google maps directions give a distance of 0.6 miles between the station and museum - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=oxford+train+station&daddr=ashmolean+museum&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=37.871902,82.001953&ie=UTF8&z=16&om=1.

I think there must be a mistake about the distances - it is about 20 mins walk from the station to the Ashmolean. It would be more like 10 minutes walk if you take a coach to the coach station, which is in the center of town.

Google Maps shows it being a 20 minute drive from OXF station to the Ashmolean. Is that not right?

Edited: sorry! linked to wrong map!

My directions on a google map show it as a 3 minute drive. Oxford is not that big and the train station is pretty central, from what I can remember.

Looking at your map, it seems you've calculated the directions from a train station a couple of towns/villages away from Oxford.

Edited to add: OXF is the code for Oxford airport - there is no train station in Kidlington as far as I can tell (if you look at the map, the railway line is a couple of miles away from where your starting point is).

If it's only about a 20 minute walk, I don't mind walking that at all. I was just worried about a 2 hour walk, which would make me late for my event! As it is, I will be arriving an hour and a half early because I wanted to plan for any delays or me getting lost (which I tend to do a lot  :-[ )

I wonder why I keep getting that other station... That seems very weird. When I looked up what I thought was the station code on Google Maps (OXF) it keeps giving me Kidlington Station, which is the one that's a 20 minute drive away. My tickets only show that I am arriving at "OXFORD", so I would assume this would be normal and I didn't buy strange tickets to a weird location and I am in fact going to the one you posted ksand24. I can't imagine ending up so far away then.
