Anyone want to recommend a good Indian cookbook?
« on: September 21, 2007, 08:15:32 PM »
I usually get recipes from the family back home since they lived there and have a great collection of books themselves. But I feel like I need to branch out myself... we pretty much stick to a repertoire of four (Kerala coconut curry, kheema, chickpea curry, or dahl) but it's time to be more adventurous!!

Suggestions?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I've never used a cookery book for Indian dishes!
DHs best mate attended an Indian cookery course, and he taught me how to make a basic madras... so with that as a base, i just adjust the ingredients, spices, etc to vary the dishes.

I used to have quite a good vegetarian one by a guy called Jack Santa Maria. Now I have a Madar Jaffrey but I hardly ever use it cause if we want a curry we usually ring up for one!

I have a few Madar Jaffrey books and I've loved everything I cooked.  I think she's a safe bet. I also have some newer shinier ones by other people but some of the recipes are hit and miss.

This is a really great website. My hubs is from Pakistan, and nearly all he eats is Indian and Pakistani food. We've gotten loads of recipes from this site. They are all yummy!

Some Indian friends gave me a copy of a book called The Turmeric Trail by Raghavan Iyer. I haven't tried many of the recipes, but the ones I've made have been excellent. He talks a lot about his childhood in India and his family history, so it's fun to read as well.

I am good friends with the woman that runs that website!  She's my friend Kavey (Kavita)!  Mamta is her mom.  It IS a small world!

Another vote for Madhur Jaffrey. Actually, my favourite cookbook of late is World Vegetarian by her, which is not an Indian cookbok, but I love the diversity of the recipes....
