No UKY thread is dead unless it's archived, in which case you wouldn't be able to see it.  :D

Any idea what is the criteria for archiving? Just wondering.

This thread did throw me for a loop when I opened it.  ;D
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Hi Doug...I'm in Derbyshire too, near Duffield. We didn't get any because we live in a secure block of flats but here's a thread with some others experiences this year. Unfortunately you found a dead thread from 2007!

This year's halloween: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=58336.0

Ouch, thanks. I've posted to the live thread.

My 85 yr old mother spent last night sitting in silence with just one light on so she would not have to struggle to get up each time kids knocked at the door requesting money. I think halloween parties etc are great fun for kids but trick or treating - I don't think of it as anything more than begging.

Of the 40+ we had, no one asked for money.

In our neighbourhood if you don't have a pumpkin you don't get bothered.  Out of 63 kids I only had 3 teenagers in hoodies.  The rest were pretty cute, well behaved and nobody asked for money.

Yep, agreed. I've lived here 15 years and have yet to be asked for money on Halloween...

We only knock on doors that are decorated...that said, it was pretty quiet last night so I wonder if people had gone out earlier than 7 when we headed out...or if there were just loads of parties as it was on a saturday this year.

Ours seemed to start around 6 and be finished early.  I think most parents timed it to be home by Strictly or the XFactor.  :)

A piece? Do you mean my comment? I only have online access - no print version anymore... did it make it into the actual paper?? If so, can someone send me a copy? I just spouted off on the nay-saying about Halloween that drove me batty in the UK. Strictly my opinion of course! ;)

You can see my comment here somewhere:

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

BTW, I was in a real mood that day - I don't normally bother to comment on anything!

I love the guy going on about how Christmas, Easter and Mother's day are all bona fide religious holidays and Halloween is bunkum.

Is this where I begin my lecture on how Halloween (Samhain), Christmas (Yule) and Easter (Ostara) were hijacked pagan holidays? Even Halloween is celebrated in the Christian faith. I, in no way, dispute that the Christian events celebrated on those days did or didn't happen, but the timing (and, in the case of Easter, naming) of them were deliberately chosen to coincide with pagan events.

Ghastly American imports, my foot
