Hmm...not only does this food seem to be addictive but it could be really bad for you.

Two "edibles" have always made me pause and think......Coca-Cola and curry dye. Anything that can remove rust from a car bumper and permanently stain a formica counter top just can't be good for your insides now can they? ;D

When I did an Indian cookery course years ago, we were told (by the Indian teacher) to buy a red powder from the local Indian grocers to colour tandoori chicken. The powder was almost impossible to remove if you got it on your hands, and some people's chickens came out of the oven positively glowing ;D. I never use it when cooking Indian at home, as it makes no difference to the taste.

On the other hand, turmeric, which is a natural product, also stains my kitchen work surfaces!

Amen brotha!

I'm not fond of curry, never touch the stuff so I was amused to hear about this because now I've got something to retort back to Jon when he says it's scandalous that I live in Leeds and don't eat curries. ::)

When I told my husband about this story after I read it in the paper, he practically ran out of the room with his hands over his ears going 'lalalalalalalalalalala'.  :P

It isn't really a surprise that some of the dyes being used in some curry houses, and chinese places, is dangerous. There are places here in York that the food looks like something made from PlayDoh with all the bright colours. It makes me suspicious. We usually try to go to the places that don't use a lot of dye and all the food looks pretty similar anyway....or it's homemade.

It's just that nasty preconception that people have that their korma must be yellow or pathia bright red. Why is brown food bad in people's minds???

we make our own curries and make them red and orange by using a base of tomato sauce and either cream or coconut milk.  comes out with a lovely, natural orangy-red color.

The Agrah chain of Indian restaurants, in the West Yorkshire area pride themselves on using fresh ingredients, no additives or colouring. They also offer a lot of vegetarian choices.
