I flew Air India from London.  At Heathrow, the plane went on to Mumbai.

I found that the JFK attendants (working for the Star Alliance, not Air India as flight attendants) were among the rudest I have ever seen.  When an old man who couldn't speak very good English was told to get rid of one of his carry ons and have it put with checked luggage, a young guy working for Star Alliance started shouting at him, telling him that if he didn't hurry, his bag would be thrown out.  It was like Star Alliance trained with the Gestapo!

The flight was pleasant...  I think the flights from the US to England are going to be better than the ones from India to England, as they're most likely going to be less crowded.  There's much less fuss.  Somebody who flew from India to England told me her flight was a nightmare.

Air India is really reliable, though.  The food on board the flight isn't that bad either.  I had a nice curry on my way over here.
The chances are there's a reason we've been left here, but I'm not disappointed.  - Idlewild

I'm set to fly Air India next Thursday from JFK to Heathrow. I guess it's a crapshoot as to how it'll be... but I'd say that about any airline.

Well, it could be worse.  Air India haven't had major problems lately.

I mean, it's a tad bit better than flying Air Kenya...

I hope you had a safe flight back to the US, though!

It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't do it again.

The plane was an old 777, but it worked out. I had two seats to myself, so I go tto stretch out a bit.

The service was great if you were at the front of the plane. Unfortunately, I wasn't. By the time they got to me, the in-flight staff had been through so much abuse they just stopped caring. (You could actually see them stop caring when they got through these three or four rows were the belligerent drunks were sitting.)

They took forever to serve the meals. Usually on the transatlantic flights, they get it out of the way early so you can sleep. Not here -- it was 3 hours into a 6 hour flight before they started. Then they stopped for 10 minutes because of minor turbulence (never seen that before). They did normal service up to two rows ahead of me, and all the way down the other aisle. Then I got a tray shoved in front of me with a gruff "Do you want a lamb curry?" Everyone else got to choose between lamb, chicken, and veggie. I was just thankful to have something to eat, though, so I took it. The lamb was tough, the sides were total crap, but the same crap you always get. (And not as bad as the tub of potato salad with chunks of smoked fish on top that BA gave me on the flight to NY.)

The entertainment was subtitled Indian flims, which were replayed throughout the flight, and a bunch of American movies that were total crap (Nancy Drew, Oceans Thirteen, a teen sex romp that I didn't get the name of). It would have been bearable if my mp3 player's battery hadn't died in the first 15 minutes of the flight.

All in all, I got what I paid for. And it was one of the smoothest landings I've ever had.
