Oh, I love grilled cheese sandwiches.  I make mine with sliced mozzarella and freshly grated parmesan on thick brown bread.  I think the trick to a perfect one is to put the butter in the pan, not on the bread.  Mmmmm.

My favorite is grilled american cheese (the white one, not the yellow) and bologna. The idea of putting condiments (i.e. mayo or mustard) inside the sandwich just grosses me out!  :-X
If I make cheese on toast, called this because I use 'real' cheese and not american, I like to put homemade chutney and spring onions on it. And I like it best with red leicester cheese. Yum!!!

Mmmm... i'd definitely eat the olive tapenade one, but no tomatoes for me, please!  :-X
I finally remembered the cheese they used with the olive tapenade: havarti! Totally yummy! :)

Here I tend to use double glouster (sp?  I can't find one that looks right  [smiley=blush.gif]) as it's the most like american (that I can remember) without using the slices.  And I agree with Lola, much better to put the butter in the pan than on the bread.

Mmmmm, bologna's good, or a tuna melt. I LOVE those. Or just plain grilled cheese with tomato soup, for when I'm sick. And a glass of 7-UP, with ice. Eat it in bed. I'm sick right now, can you tell?? :P

don't knock it until you try it!  ;)

I wondered what all this "American" cheese talk as all about. I didn't realize it has become synonymous with processed cheese!!

I know it's Un-American of me, but I've completely gone over to preferring cheddar grilled cheese instead of processed.  I even managed to convert my kids.  Sometimes I make 3-Cheese grilled cheese, with Cheddar, Red Leicester, and Double Gloucester (I can spell it because I live in Glos.) grated all together.

Tomato soup with it - yes.  Tomatoes on it - no.  Condiments - not a chance.

slightly off topic- but grilled pb&j?  my father's speciality!

Love grilled peanut butter.  But without jelly.  Obviously you have to use creamy not chunky.  I love how the PB melts and goes all liquidy instead of sticky.  I haven't had one in ages.  In fact, does it even work right with English PB?

Yesterday when I was walking home in the rain, all of the sudden I craved a nice grilled cheese sandwich and I have to admit....I wanted Kraft American cheese (the fake stuff). It melts nicely.  ;)

For me, its the best for a grilled cheese sandwich. I don't use it for anything else.

That said, I am in the UK so I can't have it regardless how much I want it.

I don't like processed cheese products, but I've seen them here... looks like Kraft, and can't be worse, can they?

That recipe calls for sourdough bread.  Can we find that here?   I packed my suitcase full of crackers and bread products this summer... but all gone now.

I think I know what 'American cheese' is now... so my relatives who asked about 'Canadian cheese' were asking if Kraft slices tasted the same in Canada?  I was like... um, we have all sorts of cheese...

How about bacon?  What do Americans mean by 'Canadian bacon'?  I thought they were asking about back bacon, but now I'm not sure.  (Not a great source of meat-based info, anyhow..)

I've never made it in the frying pan, but I love toasted PB sandwiched - toast the buttered bread in the oven then slap on the PB while it's still hot and it goes all melty.  My favorite snack as a kid. :)

My perfect grilled cheese sandwich is one made out of buttered Roman Meal bread and Kroger medium cheddar cheese.  YUM!  Here in the UK I'll use Red Leicester and Warbuton's wholemeal.
