Just made a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough with mayo and a little mustard and a bowl of split pea soup, which I never thought I would like.

How about bacon?  What do Americans mean by 'Canadian bacon'?  I thought they were asking about back bacon, but now I'm not sure.  (Not a great source of meat-based info, anyhow..)

Makes me think of that John Candy film!

Canadian bacon means back bacon, according to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon, says the vegetarian!  ;)

I did end up making grilled cheese for dinner the other night. DB was confused about the concept, but he ended up liking it (he confused it with toasted cheese or cheese on toast. not the same!!).

I agree about 2 slices of cheese, it's the perfect amount. DB liked his grilled cheese dipped in tomato soup. I don't eat it that way, but know a lot of people who do, so I let him try it like that. I like grilled cheese with a tomato slice on it. I don't do anything else with it though.

I love Friendlly's grilled cheese sandwiches. I always order that if I get dinner at Friendly's.

Anyone else read The Pioneer Woman? She had a great recipe (with pictures!) the other day for a fabulous grilled cheese sandwich:

It’s basically a glorified Grilled Cheese made with rye bread, sliced red onion, bright red tomato, whole green chilies and two kinds of cheese. The bread is slathered in butter before grilling to ensure maximum taste and maximum calories, which I’m like, totally all about. Like, totally.

Stella, you are a cruel woman. I don't care about the sandwich, I just want that can of Hatch chiles. *sob*

Just to clarify, we are talking about Grilled Cheese...and not the ubiquitous Cheese on Toast?

I think tonight might be the night to introduce my two year old American/Brit child to Grilled Cheese. Lucky Noah.

I had to have a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner a few nights ago after reading this thread, but I had to teach my husband how to make them in a pan since he started to make it in the grill.  I usually have them with mayonnaise or Miracle Whip, and I like them with tomato.  I think I'd be willing to try any combination, though; I'm not picky. :D

My boyfriend was curious about why it's called grilled cheese since it's not made on the grill...I wasn't quite sure what to say...

Dunno, since I never called a grill the grill in the US! We called it the broiler!

Here's a grilled cheese question: anyone ever tried it with halloumi? We have a boatload of the stuff DH got at Costco. Since it's vacuum packed, it'll keep a long time, but I'm running out of ideas for what to do with it!

Halloumi doesn't melt, so you won't get the same melty squidginess if you try to make grilled cheese with it. HOWEVER, this characteristic makes it perfect for so many other things!

As a vegetarian, I love to use a slab of halloumi (pan fried, so it's just slightly brown on both sides) as the 'meat' in a tasty veggie burger. Stick it on a burger roll, pile on roasted veggies and a bit of salsa, and it's absolutely delicious!!

Another great way to eat it is BBQd or grilled. Cut it into big 1-2 inch square chunks, chop up some peppers and onions, drizzle with a little olive oil and either BBQ on a skewer or put it in a roasting tin under the grill (add garlic if you do this - yum!). Eat with cous cous or on pitas.

It's also delicious chopped up, pan fried, and served with a big salad! Can you tell I love my halloumi?!

I always bring halloumi to BBQs because not everyone offers veggie substitutes. It's always so popular with the meat eaters, I need to fight them off just to save some for myself!
Ok, so I'm smug.

I love it this way too!  ;D

I haven't tried it yet, but I've got a recipe for halloumi fajitas. Should be pretty easy to improvise...

I'd love to have the problem of too much halloumi! ;D

Word to the wise...really good halloumi shouldn't squeak when you eat it! ;)

Steve always called it 'squeaky cheese'.  And then we went to Cyprus, and learned that only inferior quality halloumi is squeaky.  Not sure why that is... ???
