How long is he able to fly after quarantine?

I'm bringing my Spanky dog, his quarantine will be done mid-feb. I was wondering, how long are they OK to travel to the UK after the quarantine is complete?

I'm concerned that I won't be able to fly as soon as he's ready because of waiting on the visa, etc. I've looked around and have seen nothing stating how long it lasts.

The whole point of the PETS scheme is that you won't need to quarantine your dog.  Will you not have the process finished by the time you move over?

Rvnscarlet, I don't have a definite answer for you, because my guys were good to go on October 1st and we flew out on October 3rd - but for some reason I want to say that the certificate is good for four months.  You might want to PM julia_atlanta - she just moved over with her pets and is probably much more knowledgeable about this particular issue than I am!

Definitely!  Unlike other UK governmental organisations which shall remain nameless , DEFRA is really good about answering questions, big and small.

Because of the information she gave me it made it easier to understand the email from DEFRA. I appreciate all the help I got here with this from all of you. I can't rest a little easier now as far as Spanky is concerned.

This is what I got from DEFRA:

Please be advised for an animal to enter (or return to) the UK as part of the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) and thus avoid quarantine, the following procedures must be carried out in the stated order:

1). Animal is micro-chipped,

2). It is vaccinated against rabies, and

3). A blood sample is drawn and tested in a European Union (EU) approved laboratory.  If the required level of antibodies is reached, the animal may enter the UK 6 calendar months after the date that the sample was drawn, assuming that all other rules of the Scheme are met.

 

Further to this, pets must be treated against ticks and tapeworm not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before checking in with a PETS authorised carrier (on a PETS approved route), for the journey that brings the pet into the UK.

 

Please note after the above has been completed you should be able to obtain a third country veterinary certificate from your vet detailing the above. The third country veterinary certificate is only valid for 4 months, so I would advise acquiring just prior to travel.

                                                             

A health certificate may be required by the carrier so I would advise checking with them prior to travel, if a health certificate is required you should be able to obtain this from a vet.

 

Your dog should remain PETS compliant and valid for travel once the above preparations are made if documented correctly, there are no time restrictions with regards to when your dog must travel prociding  all vaccinations are kept up to date and your dog stays within PETS compliant countries.

and this is what julia_atlanta had to offer:

basically you follow all the steps, in the right order and you get all the way to the blood test that gets you the result you want.

Then you don't have to get any forms filled out until you're ready to move. About 2-3 months before you move you fill out the forms, get your vet to sign them and then send them off to the USDA to endorse them.

The thing you MUST do is keep your dogs rabies vaccines current. Here's what I ended up doing:

started pets process in 2003 (did microchip, did vax, got blood drawn, got results back) Then every year I got their vaccines BEFORE they were due and kept the records (make sure the microchip number is on the rabies vaccination records each time).

Then when we were ready to move I took all the original paperwork from 2003 plus the 4 additional rabies vaccination   record forms and sent them all to the USDA.

If you look on DEFRA's website you'll notice it says you only have to get one blood titer test providing you keep current rabies vaccinations. If it lapses for one day you have to start all over.

It was a piece of cake for me and I was really worried because I had so much time in between. I also called DEFRA before I left to make sure I had done everything right and they assured me I had.

You can go ahead and get the forms filled out but they are only valid for 4 months so don't worry about getting those filled out until 2-3 months before you're ready to move. Its just a waste of money to keep getting your vet and the USDA to fill out unnecessary forms.
