Clostridium Difficile - or C-Diff to its friends
« on: October 12, 2007, 08:26:21 PM »
So C-Diff is all over the news this week and I am interested to know if you, or anyone you know has had it.

Its the kind of thing you never ever hear about, but once you or someone you know gets it...everyone you mention it to has had it or knows someone who does.

Its a nasty b3stard of a hospital bug and my husband had it twice this year...worst thing is our doctor was hesitant to test for it and he had full blown c-diff while at home with myself and our (at the time) 18 month old baby. He had just been released from the hospital after a nasty case of pneumonia. Our local hospital, the one where our son was born was clean, and the staff well presented and seemed to take good care of the private room he was in.

Anyway, just interested to hear your take on this.

Home births are great, but you shouldn't worry too much about C-diff in a maternity ward, unless you are on massive doses of antibiotics or someone else in the ward has it.

I have it. About 5 years ago, after taking some amoxicillin the dentist gave me after having a tooth extracted, I became very ill after two days. I can't even tell you how bad it was, just really bad. They put me on the only drug that helps with it, and it went away. But it does come back. I have had two reoccurances of it this year. I did not get it from the hospital. Just from taking wide spectrum antibiotics. Last spring they put me in the hospital when I was having a bout with it, but that was mainly because it caused my blood suger to sky rocket. I was put in an isolated room for preventative measures.

Oh, and it wasn't massive doses of antibiotics I was on, and I had only been on them a full day and a half when I got ill.

The hospitals are catching alot of flack, but people need to be aware that it's not just 'a hospital bug'.

i talked to my sister in the chicago suburbs on saturday. she said that it's become a problem there, along with mrsa, in locker rooms & health clubs. her school (she teaches) was disinfecting over the weekend.

Yes, mrsa is a big problem here in DC. My friend was admitted to the hospital for this - in quarantine/emergency surgery. He probably got it from the gym. Yikes. It's very scary. Main thing is to cover up an open cut immediately.
