Certain food combo is a nono?
« on: October 14, 2007, 02:21:53 PM »
Due to recent turn of events at work, we have all started working Saturday and Sunday.  As a "Sorry we're making you work on weekends" we get breakfast and lunch for free.  So the other day, we had blueberry bagels from Panera and they came with the sundried tomato cream cheese.  I'm not an eccentric eater by any means but I was hungry so I grabbed one.  Totally freaking out, one of my co workers ripped it from my hands and told me I shouldn't eat it because it turns into poison.  She said blueberries and tomato cause upset stomach and the "runs".  She wasn't the only one that felt that way.  The rest of the co workers chimed in and thought I was totally bizarre for not knowing that.  So half a dozen of blueberry bagels lay uneaten.  Later on they told me onion and honey also did the same thing.

So with that said, has anyone heard of something like that?  Are there foods you would absolutely not put together?

I always learned that foods that are okay separately are okay when they are put together.

...but yet dipping french fries in ice cream is OK?...

I dont believe there is anything poisonous about it, but... who would put blueberries and sundried tomatoes together?
That sounds completely disgusting to me.

Ditto dipping french fries in ice cream.

I like plain bagels myself (I scrap off the cheese).  I don't understand why people need to add cream cheese unless maybe they are making a sandwich.
Chocolate bagels with cream cheese are ick to me.

I'm lactose-intolerant, but basically with only milk. Neither my British husband nor I have ever heard any warnings about combining the foods you mentioned. It sounds like old wives' tales to me.

Well I have never heard that tomatoes and blueberries don't go. The runs? I just don't believe it...
I have to say though, it doesn't sound like a popular combination!

Honestly, I think your co-workers are full o' crap. I've never heard anything so silly in my life and if someone can find anything about this, I'd be very interested to read it. I'm sure there are many times when I've had tomatoes and blueberries in the same sitting (ok, not 'together' - that is a bit gross). I've certainly had tomato pasta or tomato salad followed by a dessert with blueberries.

I'm quite frankly amazed by this.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

You're right, I've probably had spaghetti and then a blueberry dessert at one time or another.

I've never heard that either.  But the combo sounds awful to me.

I do love a good bagel with cream cheese and lox though.  Used to be my breakfast every weekend at my parents.

A few people I know are into stuff like that... not sure where they get their info.  I've been told not to eat carbs and protein together.  Goodbye, crackers and smoked salmon?

There are loads of crazy food theories about.  I read a magazine that said most illnesses were caused by rancid cooking oil, and that all oils should be in the fridge.  So, I put the oils in the fridge... where they were useless, as then I couldn't get them out of the bottles.  Unless they were warmed up, which was bad.

Blueberries and tomatoes together just sound bad, agreed.

I would ignore your coworkers next time, eat what you want, and then decide if there's any merit to what they say. (Incidentally, if your company thought for a second that what they ordered was genuinely making people sick, don't you think they'd change the menu!?!?) Surely someone would have complained by now. (Then again, this is Britain, so I wouldn't be surprised if people sat around silently suffering--another huge culture shock).

Here's something my Dad told us:  If you eat green apples, then drink a glass of milk, you'll die.

Well, not dead yet.

Along the lines of: If you swallow a watermelon seed, one will grow in your stomach; or if you swallow a piece of gum, it will take seven years to digest.

The food was from Panera, she's in the US.

I had to do a Google search to see if I could find anything corroborating your co-workers' assumptions.  I couldn't.  But I did find this recipe.  Perhaps you should make some and bring it in to work. ;D

Sorry, I got my facts wrong. I hadn't heard of that chain in the States, so I assumed it was British. Regardless, I still think her coworkers are full of s--t.
