Shipping Stuff From London To SF..Tips anyone ?

Heyhey-

Wife and i are moving back to San Francisco after a 3 year stay in London. Can anyone suggest the least expensive method of shipping our stuff back to SF ?
We mainly have clothing...about 6 huge suitcases worth. I know we could take it as excess luggage and have the bags travel with us, but i was wondering if shipping them to our address in SF via boat would be any cheaper ?

Would love to hear from anyone who has gone through this..
