Oh for the love/hate of Fruit cake!

I know people constantly take the piss out of fruitcake, but if you can, order a couple of Claxton fruitcakes from the States. They'll change your mind forever.

Who takes the piss out of fruit cakes?

They have pretty good ones here. Ever tried a Dundee cake?

But at the end of the day, there isn't nothing like your own homemade Christmas cake.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Yeah, that classic (American?) joke just doesn't go over the same way here -- how there is really only one fruitcake (the kind in the round tin), that gets regifted around the world, since no one will eat it... ;)
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

I'm with you!

I spent my first Christmas in the UK last year.  Not be rude to my now ex-boyfriend's mother, I happily accepted a piece of her homemade, mother's recipe, Christmas Cake. To my horror it was fruit cake!  I drowned it in cream and quickly choked it down.  When I asked my BF why he wasn't having any he said he hates Christmas Cake!  ::)

I did have a laugh at the whole production around it...Turning down the lights and setting it on fire!  They should have let it burn!

I love good fruitcake! But it has to be good and it has to be homemade. I'm really late making mine this year, but I generally keep 'feeding' it with booze, so by Christmas it's scrumptious!! It's not the sort of thing you eat a big slab of, but a thin slice of cake with a glass of sherry is one of my favourite things about Christmas.

How do these compare to traditional English fruitcakes? DH is really wanting to either buy one this year or have me make one. The one's we've been finding here in the States are dismal.

DB thought I was having a laugh when I showed him a fruit cake here. He said it's not fruit cake.

DB bought a fruit pudding for me to try, I hated it, but it wasn't homemade. He said it's a lot better homemade and on Christmas. I'll try it, but I"m not counting on liking it!

Go to www.claxtonfruitcake.com. They also sell pecans, etc. Trust me on this one. I don't know what their overseas shipping stance is, though.

Mmm... there are few things this nice Jewish girl enjoys more than good, homemade fruitcake at the holidays!

Not something I'm wild about. But DH made Nigella recipe for the US folks last year and that was not bad.

What drives me bonkers is fruit cake for wedding cake. Bleugh!!!!!!!!!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

hate it as well.  There is a pretty famous bakery in Texas (name escapes me at the moment) that is well-known for their fruitcakes and every year my grandpa sends me one from there.  Bless him, it's the thought that counts but to spend $35 on a fruitcake and another $35 on postage how do I tell him we don't like fruitcake!! ???

That must have been Christmas pudding, not Christmas cake - although I can appreciate that if you don't like the cake you probably wouldn't like the pudding either.

Nothing better than a nice slice of fruitcake and a piece of Wensleydale cheese. ;)
