I don't really like fruitcake, but when it's in Christmas pudding form with cream and such on it (and set on fire!) then it's not as bad.

Fruitcake as wedding cake is just ugh, though.  I am very much looking forward to my red velvet wedding cake in Texas next year!

I loathe american fruitcake with it's golf ball size cherries and whole nuts. My dad for some bizarre reason, sent me one over once and I brought it to work and everyone hated it.

Oooh, that's nasty stuff!! Bears no resemblance at all to good UK Christmas cake!

It'll be fine! Yet another example of the magic of fruitcake!  ;D

I barely even had a mouthful of our wedding cake - we were so busy talking and drinking that I don't really remember eating much! I got a fruitcake round because it was tradition and I guess I'm an old-fashioned girl at heart (minus the nose ring and tattoos of course) and so stuck with the Brit tradition.... The sponge round was hardly touched but that's probably because most of our guests were British. I froze a bit of it and we had some along with the last bottle of our champagne on our first anniversary which was a nice gesture, but at the end of the day year-old-cake is no more than that - a gesture!!!  :P

ooh, and just to add- while I'm not too fond of regular fruitcake (both the American and British varieties) I quite like black cake, which is the Caribbean version of fruitcake....it's traditional to make it at Christmas.  It's got figs and other fruit, along with lots and lots of rum ;D

I LOVE carrot cake.  Had it for my birthday a couple months ago, actually!  My dad (who was visiting at the time) was scandalised that I had passed on chocolate :-D.

The fruitcake over here is really nice. American fruitcake never appealed to me, maybe because it has such a reputation. I think its all the candied peel that lets it down. Its not everyone's favorite.

Yeah, as I said earlier I don't like the stuff...I have to give my guy a hard time, as he is very vigilant about 'sell by dates', and yet he thinks its acceptable to eat a cake that's been out in the elements (ok just sat in a room!) for a year.  It is magical...certainly a mystery to me!

I love homemade fruitcake though - Delia's recipe being the rolls royce of fruitcakes.

Rolls Royce...LOL   ;D

I find the icing and marzipan a bit much so I usually just pick it off and just have the cake.

We went to a wedding last month and the happy couple had carrot cake for one of their layers. Heavenly!

I'm another carrot cake lover (which is odd, because I don't like just eating carrots raw, but I love carrot cake!)  I think a wedding carrot cake would be a lovely alternative to fruitcake :)

That's cause its all sugar-laden, thus masking the taste of carrots--and the frosting on carrot cake is sooo good!
