Amazon DVD rental
« on: October 15, 2007, 11:47:05 PM »
Someone recommended Amazon's DVD rental program as they have an enormous catalogue of DVDs and it's pretty cheap and easy to use.  Has anyone used this?
I ask because we've had a big problem with damaged DVDs.  The first 2 we got skipped alot in the first half hour or so and would not continue playing at certain points.  I'm bummed because it's a great way to see movies I've wanted to see but never got around to and is easy to watch as the baby severely restricts our cinema-going as well!

Does anyone know if any other services that do rentals that have better quality DVDs?

Hi Matt (oh, I so owe you guys a lasagne or something - maybe early November?)

We just started using Easy Film (or is it Easy Cinema?) and it's been great. And what is better for us is that you pay into it and you get credits - and the credits don't expire. So if you take weeks and weeks to watch a film (which we sometimes do) you're not wasting a whole month's subscription. So far the quality has been fine as well....

I have Amazon rental, no problems yet! There is also Netflix and Blockbuster to look into if you don't trust Amazon's quality.  I hope our DVD's never turn up scratched, it would be a big dissapointment!

I tried Amazon once and had no prob, but that was when they limited you to 6 discs a month so we quit. I plan on going back soon. I'm currently with Blockbuster, and the discs are scratched sometimes (that's unavoidable with as many people's hands as they go through), but none to the point that it impaired viewing at all. I'm going to leave them because it's gotten to the point that they don't send us new releases (all the dvd companies do this if you're a high volume user).

Just avoid Lovefilm, as they not only have the crappiest discs around, they don't let you rank by number the discs you want and they make it very hard to quit! Be careful, as Lovefilm is the actual company that handles many of the other home DVD providers, like Tesco and easycinema.

Here is a list of reviews and costs of various DVD rental services. It's only slightly out of date, as it hasn't noted that Amazon now has unlimited rental plans. http://www.uk-dvd-rental-guide.com/.

We've had Amazon for a long time and we love it.  We once had a scratched children's DVD but we checked the thing on the envelope when we sent it back.  Otherwise it's been great.

We've had Amazon for over a year (6 discs a month plan) and only had one scratched DVD which was immediately replaced.  I liked the fact that they sent it immediately and didn't wait until the damaged DVD was returned.  We've been really happy with Amazon and have just recently switched to their new unlimited DVD plan.

i've been using amazon.co.uk for about a year now... 2 dvd/month.  never had a problem with a scratched disc.  if/when you email them, do they credit that DVD to your account?
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

No, they don't credit your account.  They send a replacement DVD.

They actually did credit us with an extra free DVD when I complained about the first disc, maybe because we were new customers?  They did send out other ones quickly but the first 2 were scratched.  By that point I was fed up and asked for a refund which they gave me but they sent out the 3rd one in the meantime.  Granted, it wasn't scratched and there;s alwways the possibility that I could get a ton more and none would be scratched but I just thought it was a bit poor to have my first 2 scratched so badly!  I'll check out some of the others mentioned.

Anne - no worries, I know how busy we all are, we'll have to get together soon.  Maybe potluck Thanksgiving type thing? Or an early November lasagne :)
