guys, I am so jealous!  I have wanted an Apple laptop since I went to uni in 2002- even then my plans were foiled by my uni giving me a PC laptop, and I just bought a new Dell desktop because the macs were too expensive :(  But I want to be in the Mac users club!! I use my mum's iMac whenever I'm at home, does that count? ;)

yes, it counts! If you were in the states, I would have given you my iMac.  I just gave it away because it couldn't go with me to the UK!

My powerbook is close to 2 years old and runs just like brand new. Any PC would be starting to crap out on me by now.

use the UK and US sites to compare the prices.

I am partial to US keyboard and I think the UK prices are inflated regardless of the VAT included.

Totally true. And if you can, use an edu discount. I don't know if your DF is still in school or not springhaze, but if he is, take advantage of that! You can save a little cash!

He is still in school, but only for this year...but my younger brother is still at uni for another three years, so he might have to hook me up ;).  I agree that the student discount is awesome- my dad actually bought my mum's iMac in my name when I was a senior in college to get the discount!  It was really sad to see a package addressed to me though with a mac in it that wasn't really mine *sniff* but my mum loves it so it's all good!

What size do you have.  I'm thinking the smaller one, I like that you can tote it around easily.

I may be the first woman to say this and mean it, but size really doesn't matter.  I have a 20" flat screen on my iMac, and was really worried that going to a smaller laptop would be a big pain, but it's really not a big deal at all.  I went the less-is-more route with my laptop and bought a 13" MacBook, and I L-O-V-E it.  It weighs nothing, and fits into a backpack/messenger bag super easy.

Granted, it's not the super-sexy Pro, but it still has everything I need!

Yep!  They are great!  I only got the Pro because, at the time, it had more power for the Photography programs and such.

My uni ID doesn't have an expiration date on it..... ;)

I was toying with the idea of getting a new MacBook but I didn't like the idea of 'downgrading' to a 13 inch from my 14 inch. Then I thought about taking advantage of the exhange rate and going for the 17 inch!!

I've been holding out for something new but since my HD just got rebooted clean I may just upgrade to Leopard and get a new one later. Aw, my faithful laptop has been kind for 2 years and I want to replace it already! The Apple guy said there was no need unless all I cared about was the newest model.  ;D I think I can wait... maybe.  ;)

OK. Please don't all get angry ... but .... why are Mac users so ... rabid? I mean, Macs are fine, but I've never had a PC last fewer than 5 or 6 years and have never had a problem. PC users tend to be less vocal, but that's no reflection on PCs. I've used both, although I used Macs first, and I can go back and forth between the two easily. Honestly, these days there's very little difference. To me, the only difference is PCs have always been more convenient and adaptable.
