Peanut Butter & Jelly/Jam sandwich
« on: October 17, 2007, 02:44:30 PM »
So...  I was having a PB&J sandwich the other day and told my Brit about it, and he was absolutely revolted at the idea of peanut butter and "jelly" together ???... Now, he explained to me that Jelly was a different product over in Englnd, but it still surprised me that he had never heard of the combination before and thought it to be disgusting (I vowed to make him try it when he's over in December)....  so I was wondering..... is this just my boyfriend.....  or is it a cultural thing where brits have never heard and/or made a PB&J....  Can other Americans relate to me on this? :P

My DH is the same way. He thinks it's disgusting when I have a PB&J. Looks at me like I'm nuts. On the other hand, I think his cheese and onion or cheese and Branston pickle sandwiches are horrible. ;D

I'm British...and I love peanut butter and jam sandwiches!  It is an American thing though, but some of us know about them...I think through reading Judy Blume books as a child!

When my mum used to make my sandwiches for school, she refused to make PB&J for me, so she'd make one jam, one PB, and when I got to school I'd swap the top slices and squish!

Yum!

Definitely a culture thing.  When I was a kid i'd hear about PB & J in movies and thought it sounded disgusting.  When I finally got round to having one (I tried to make one here but Sunpat + my grans jam does not a PB & J make) I didn't like it at all.  I can't really understand why it's so popular.  My husband definitely misses it though.

My former boss - British born & raised and only a few years older than me - loved peanut butter & jam sandwiches as a kid.  Same with someone I work with in my current job.  I just think it depends on how "open minded" some people's parents may have been?  I remember my mother feeding me quite a few things as a kid in the US that other US kids didn't really "get".

Oh well, I'm American and I don't much care for PB&J. Not a big peanut fan.

My husband cannot tolerate the idea of a PB&J...but I feed our daughter pb and honey and she loves it, he just does not like peanut butter, but he was made to try a fluffnnutter sandwich and the picture of his face is priceless ;D he hated it, it was so funny cuz he was trying to be nice to my SIL about it, still makes me chuckle.

Jelly=Jello here... now that might be a bit odd indeed!

My DH thought the idea was gross, but after trying one he was converted.  He doesn't eat them on a regular basis, but does like them.  His family all think it's gross and aren't willing to try it.

I have sat in many debates with Brits about PBJ  and I proudly defended my right to mix sweet and savory things  :P

I love pb&j sandwiches.  ;D  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]   when I lived back in the States I worked the midnight shift when my first break came round at 1:15 am I would have a pb&j everynight. I was always teased by my friends saying I was going to turn into a peanut one day cause I ate so many of them. when I go to my WW meeting on Wednesday morning's I don't eat breakfast before I get weighed in. after I had been  weighed I go an sit down & I would eat my pb&j sandwich I made before I left the house an wait for the meeting to start. the looks I got from the women at the WW meeting at first they were grossed out but over time they got used to me having it after my weigh-in. every Saturday around noon after my morning of swimming & doing my gym routine I walk back to Dh's shop an have my pb&j I made for myself before we left the house. Dh wont eat one he says it looks & smells bad thats fine with me that just means more for me.  ;D   [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

I love 'em!  And my Brit hates peanut butter - full stop, but then he was traumatized by peanut butter as a child. :P

And how!  My favorite combo is Smuckers Natural Chunky PB and Blueberry Jam.
