kick-ass apple crumble recipe?

Anyone? I have cox apples and a few granny smiths...
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

This is my favorite apple dessert ever!  It reminds me of apple pie, but is made crumble style.  My grandma's best friend brought this to every church potluck.

Dutch Apple Cake

4 tart apples (2 cups)
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 tbsp. milk

Combine flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl.  Combine oil and milk in measuring cup, whip with fork.  Pour into flour mixture.  Mix with fork until dampened.  Pat out to cover bottom of an 8x8 pan.  Arrange apples over pastry and then sprinkle some cinnamon over the apples.

3/4 cup sugar
2 tbsp. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. butter

Mix sugar, flour, and salt.  Cut in butter with fork until crumbly.  Sprinkle mixture over top of apples. Bake at 425 degrees for 40 minutes.

Since my MIL is here and I love her crumbles I asked her.  She makes this everytime we come to visit and it's always so good.

5 to 6 peeled and cored apples

For crumble
8 oz flour (any)
4 oz marg or butter
2 oz sugar

Slice apples into chunks, not to thin. Put into saucepan with water to cover, then pour out water. Mix with 2 tbs sugar bring to boil and simmer 5 minutes (Until soft)

Cut marg or butter into bits then mix up with flour till you get bread crumbs then add sugar and mix

Put apples into baking/pyrex dish and let cool a bit, sprinkle on crumble put in oven at 170 for 20 minutes or golden brown.

here's what i do (i've got no measurements, i just do it by sight):

peel & slice apples. sprinkle with white sugar. throw in a pyrex casserole dish.

in a separate bowl, mix oatmeal, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon & melted butter to make it a little clumpy. throw this over the top of the apples & bake until the apples look good & done (that's where the pyrex comes in handy).

this is absolutely awesome with fresh cranberries tossed into the apples, and with chopped pecans in the topping.

my gram rocks ;D

I don't have a specific recipe for mine.  I just peel/core/slice enough apples AND pears to cover the bottom of a pyrex dish to a depth of about 2 inches.  Mix the apple and pear slices with brown sugar, cinnamon, and about 2 teaspoons of lemon juice.  Place in the dish and sprinkle 3-4 tsp water over the fruit and bake for 20 mins at 200C.

Meanwhile, mix rolled oats (a cup or two, depending on the size of your dish), a couple of teaspoons plain flour, a teaspoon or so of cinnamon, and a few tablespoons of brown sugar together, then rub in a few ounces of unsalted butter.  Spread this over the baked fruit and bake for another 20 mins or so at 200C.

I made an apple crumble pie tonight as a result of this thread... added some crushed walnuts into the crumble (pretty much like Lola's)... It's pretty.. now to see if it tastes as good as it looks!
