Where to find Pumpkin patches/Orchards...
« on: October 20, 2007, 10:56:30 PM »
in or around the London area.
Halloween is my favourite holiday of the year(has been for as long as Ive been around)
and I am wondering where I can find an orchard to pick up a pumpkin for this year?

I love fall and the transitioning of the seasons. The smell of burning leaves also makes me go back in time to my youthful days of trick or treating...and im majorly craving apple cider!

Any suggestions? ;D

I don't know of any pumpkin patches anywhere but English grocery stores always sell them however be prepared to pay way too much for a way too small pumpkin!

I have to say, though, that I've never, ever seen a pumpkin patch in my life... not in the US, and not here!

there are LOTS of Allotments in the London area and if you scout some of them have grown pumpkins and will happily GIVE you pumpkins. The allotment we belong to had a pumpkin contest some of them zone in on one pumpkin that can be a potential winner and prune off the rest!

And if you're looking for a halloween party to go to pm me I'm having one you're welcome to join us ;D
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

We bought pumpkins yesterday from Sainsbury's that were pretty big (same as what you'd see in the U.S.) for only 1 pound each. Yet, on High Street, the Veg Shop was selling tiny pumpkins for 2 pounds each.

If anyone is in the southwest near Exeter, Dart's farm has great pumpkins, reasonably priced. We could see the patches in the distance but didn't go to see them.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I was looking online for pumpkin patches, but came across loads of cool autumn-y things all over the country! Here are a few:

Tulley's Farm in Crawley, West Sussex (they also have some Hallowe'en themed stuff)

Forty Acres Farm in Hampshire (and a spooky pumpkin ride!)

Crockford Bridge Farm Shop in Surrey (their website also says they stock American foods!)

I never knew there were so many! Just Google: +pumpkins +farm

I know there have been big issues with large pumpkins this year due to the rainy summer. They have not been able to ripen properly and they said there would be a large pumpkin shortage. Little ones for baking have not been affected.

So, if you want one, get it now before they are all gone. Not that I have noticed to be honest, our store has plenty.

Yep, us too. Bought a very healthy sized (bigger than a basketball) from our local Sainsbury's this week for 99p. Bargain!

Check out Willows Farm in St Albans (about half an hour outside London). Not just a pumpkin patch -- it's really an Under 10s attraction with animals, tractor rides, bouncy castles, etc. and the steep admission price reflects all that, so if you don't have kids, it's probably not worth it. But if you do, it would be perfect -- they're having a pumpkin festival right now and among the attractions is a HUGE pick your own field. We were there with friends yesterday and it was great... felt just like the pumpkin picking patches of my American youth. In fact, as all the kiddos hunted for just the right pumpkin, an English friend who was with me asked "is it meant to be like this?" She'd never seen anything like it!

Thanks guys for all the suggestions!

I will definitely check out Sainsbury's! Thanks for that! And I will plan better next year on scouting out a orchard/pumpkin patch sooner.

ASDA has them as well for £1-- which i saw after I got mine from Morrisons and it was £1.99 for a large one, which i still found reasonable.

Looking back at threads in the past....Don't know if the invite was directed towards me or not, but thanks! I ended up doing a Halloween party at the flat which was more work than what it was worth, but I made a kicka$$ taco salad....:-)
