[SPLIT]Roasted Pumpkin Seeds (was: Unexpected pleasures)
« on: October 28, 2007, 09:45:11 AM »
I made the best roasted pumpkin seeds yesterday, DH and I have been eating handfull after handful.
Plus I met a real Native American from Oaklahoma yesterday, but I can't remember what tribe she is from.  She gave me free tickets to the next pow-wow, and she took all our old lingering car boot junk.

I'm making my jack-o-lantern tomorrow, and I can't wait to roast the seeds!

How do you make pumpkin seeds? I have two big pumpkins ready for carving and I'd love to roast the seeds!

OK, I have been looking for pumpkin seeds with the shell on for ages now.
They are soooo good.  Rich just bought another pumpkin for me to get them out of and roast.  But I need to know how as well.

Anyone know where to buy them if you want to?

Don't you just let them dry out on newspaper, cover them with salt and then roast them?

Probably, but what temp and how long do you roast :P  (You know I have no clue about these things.)

Do you put oil on it (to make the salt stick)?

That's what we always do. I'm going to have to make some soon too! I love roasted pumpkin seeds! I suppose you could do other powdered flavours on it, but I love it with just salt. Pumpkin Pie Spice might be nice though. Maybe I'll have to make a Pumpkin Pie Spice mix and try half with that and half with just the salt and see how it tastes.  :)

Also, we put the salt on them while still damp so it sticks. We actually don't dry them out first, just put out on a tray and roast.

I just dried mine, tossed them with a bit of olive oil, sprinkled with salt and roasted at 190 for about 45 mins.

You could use other flavourings besides plain salt - garlic salt, paprika, curry powder, etc. - but I like them simple.

That's pretty much how I do it, although I add a little black pepper.  Hmm... maybe I'll carve the pumpkin today!

Ooops, I think it was 150, not 190.
