Weird cat thing
« on: October 31, 2007, 07:29:18 PM »
This has nothing to do with moving. But since it involves a pet I'll put it here.

Recently, one of our cats we have has been doing this very odd thing. She'll come up to me while I'm laying down and start to gentle nibble and suck on my ear lobe! She'll do it non-stop until I physically stop her and move her away from me. She only does it to me and no one else. She'll also come up to me while I'm covered up with a blanket and start doing the same thing to the blanket.
I've had cats all my life,. but never had or heard of a cat doing this. Anyone know why she could be doing this?

No, but I'm jealous! I wish my cat would nibble my earlobe!! Wait ... is that gross?

When I was growing up, our cat used to suck on my dad's beard. Maybe it's like a security blanket sort of thing for them - like a reminder of nursing from their mother?

I used to have a cat that would knead (march?) on me, where they flex their claws in & out...and drool on me! :)

Don't all cats knead? That's another thing that goes back to when they were nursing - the action stimulates the mother's milk. So I think that's why I wondered if the nibbling and sucking was similar.

My cat does that, too.  As well as a bunch of other odd things... if cats could smoke, she would.  The vet said it was oral fixation caused by being weaned too early, and trauma from being dumped on the street as a kitten.

I think she's just weird and wonderful.

Yes, but I thought it was weird that she would be drooling on me at the same time.

Oh, I see. I think some cats are just droolers. My bf's cat does it a lot. And my aunt's cat drools, too, but that's because she was hit by a car about 6 years ago and her jaw was broken. It never fit back together properly, so she has trouble keeping her saliva in, the poor little thing. I kind of like a cat drooling on me.

I think it is a security thing and comforting thing because as shes doing it, I can tell shes starting to fall asleep. It can just get so annoying after awhile lol. Like having a drop of water drip on your head over and over again. lol.
They both are 2 very loving kittens, whos always purring ,licking, and laying on someone

As far as I know she had no trauma. I bought her and her sister from someone when they were 8 weeks old. I couldn't bare the thought of breaking up a family so I bought both of them so they could have something familiar.

The other one isnt so weird, she just meows..... A LOT.

My kitten does this.  He does this whilst he sleeps on my neck at night.

Is it just your earlobe, or does she, erm, delve a little deeper?  My cat used to love grooming my hair and ear and lick ( :P :-X) my ear wax.  It's a thing some cats do.  Apparently.

It's normal. I've had many cats who do the drooling or nibbling thing. It's a throwback to the nursing, some just carry on with it! One of our cats now is obsessed with kneading my hair and drooling. And yes, it does get a weeeeeeeeeeeee bit tiresome at times!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I haven't had any cats nibble, but I have heard of that too and did hear that it has to do with cats being weaned too early. My cat can be too cuddly too. It's nice but sometimes I just want some space!

I know what you mean.  Especially at 4am when my kitten is purring in my ear and drooling all over my face!

I only get it at 7:30am when he wants his breakfast. And then it's more like this.
