What American chains are in London?
« on: November 03, 2007, 01:06:54 PM »
We're going to London in December, 2 nights so really only one full day. We'll do a bit of sightseeing but what American chains are there? I know of Krispy Kreme and Papa John's... we live WAY up in the north of Scotland where the only American place is Mcdonalds! So anyone have any recommendations? We want to take the opportunity to eat out American style.  ;D

We have TGI Fridays and Subway up here, I forgot about those! Not a TGI fan anyway. ;)

Or Chilis for that matter! I never did like Mexican chain restaurants except the faux-Mexican Taco bell. Much preferred the little restaurants run by real Mexicans.

I know we'll have to make a run to a store that sells root beer too.

I didn't know there was a chilis in London! Have you been there? Have you been to a USA based Chilis and if so are they the same? What are the prices like?

I know there are Outback steakhouses in England also. There's one in Brum but I've never been there.

Yep it's in Canary Wharf, went there a few times, it's great!

Where in the north of Scotland are you that you have a Fridays? We are in Inverness and I thought the nearest to here was Edinburgh.

Is there a particular chain you're looking for?

Aberdeen has one. :)

Well, some of our favourites are burger places like Fuddruckers and Red Robin. Fast food that they don't have here (Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, etc).

Oh yes I forgot there is one there. Still a long way from us though.

Sorry none of those chains are in the UK ( I know cause my husband is always checking!!).  You could try Ed's Diner, it's a fifities US style burger chain.

I went to Chili's in Cambridge back in '98.  My friend had been in Switzerland all summer and was desperately craving Mexican food.  We just took a train from London for the day and one of those hop-on, hop-off "Big Bus" to get in the sightseeing quickly.  We hopped off where there was supposed to be a local Mexican restaurant, but it alluded us.

We ended up in this shopping centre that was just like any mall anywhere.  Lo and behold, there was Chili's.  Texas margaritas, the same menu as far as I could tell.  The food was the same.  Kids were "cruising" in Mercedes, Jags and BMWs around the car park outside.  After 2 margaritas and 2 beers each we forgot that we weren't at a mall in Columbia, S.C. or Atlanta, and didn't have to worry about how we were getting home.  It was surreal.  I think I went to Chili's here once after that, around 2000 or so?

I found the UK website with the menu and prices here though: http://www.chilis.uk.com/

Speaking of Outback, I've heard they have at least one location in Australia too!  That's pretty hilarious.

I don't think it's a chain, but Bodeans is a BarBQ place that's supposed to be good.

Oh it's FANTASTIC!!! A bunch of us met up there one time. You wouldn't be disappointed. It reminded me of a place in Maryland called "Red, Hot and Blue" Memphis style BBQ. YUMMY!!!!

Yes it's very much delish! I remember the brisket sandwich with coleslaw on top. OK, a trip to Bodeans is in order!

Mmmmmm!!! Red Hot and Blue!!! I haven't been there in years!!!!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Definitely stop in at Bodean's for a full slab.  YUM!  There's one on Poland Street, I think, near Oxford Circus (unless I'm totally misremembering), and I've been to another one as well, in London, but I can't remember where.  They also show NFL football on Sundays (and they'll stay open late for the evening games). :)

It's VERY VERY VERY good.  They do excellent brisket ("burnt ends" they call it) on Wednesdays and Sundays that I highly recommend.  We eat at the one in Clapham every month or so for a good fix.  They also serve A&W root beer, cream soda, and Coors Light! :P Good pecan pie, too.
