Very large Red Delicious apples
« on: November 04, 2007, 09:24:39 AM »
I have been looking for these for a long time since moving here and up to now all I found was Marks and Spencer that had the little tiny ones.
But alas, Lidl has them! I bought 5 and could barely close the baggie they were so big!
But the real test was eating one, very good! Sweet, crunchy and not at all mealy and bittie.
(dunno if that makes any sense, but as an apple fan i hate it when they are yuck on the inside).
Anyhow these were deffinitely the same size that I would find back home, I was just shocked to see them!
I hope they keep them stocked.

A couple of years ago Budgens were selling Red Delicious.  They were quite a size too.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

Exciting!! I was looking for them a few days ago and ended up buying little ones from TESCO instead. I do miss the shiny red waxy apples from the stores in the USA. The just look so great!

ASDA in my area Cambridgeshire was carrying the large Washington Red Delicious apples & the had a sticker on them that said produce of the USA they were ever so good. I'm not sure if they are still carrying them though or moved the apples to a different spot, cause when Dh & I were in ASDA last week they weren't where they used to be at though. they were the perfect size for my after gym snack since I cant find Pink Lady apples anymore.   :(  [smiley=disappointed.gif]

I'm with Balmerhon.  Yuck,  'Delicious' apples.  McIntosh are the ones I miss.

Another non-fan of the red delicous apple! Ick!! I do miss Macouns, though. They have that "apple-y explosion" when you bite into them!

Not keen on Delicious apples here either.  I'm a Granny Smith kinda gal. :)

I prefer red apples to green apples, but I dont really think Red Delicious are as nice as some other red ones, like Braeburn or Gala.   Pink Lady are nice too, as long as they are very, very pink without too much yellow on them.

Pink Lady apples are awesome!  Yummy!  I am a huge apple fan and back in Philadelphia always looked forward to this time of year because of the explosion of different apples we got in at the natural food market I worked at.  So many kinds I had to try one of each and then pick my absolute favorites from that!

I must say I grew up with a very non-adventurous (food-wise) family.  I thought Red Delicious were the only kind of apple that existed until I was big enough to do my own shopping.  Sorry but Red Delicous are boooring and usually mealy in my experience.  And don't even talk to me about yucky waxy coatings on produce (apples, cucumbers, etc,)--disgusting.  It's all to make things look pretty but then unless you peel the stuff you gotta eat wax.

Sorry if I sound like a freak but I loooove my apples!

Morrisson's sell them both bagged and loose and they're a good range of sizes!  I keep getting my MIL hooked on my favorite "American" foods.   ;D

When you find the right kind of Red Delicious (not mealy on the inside, 'course), they are, well, delicious.  I find that they do tend to get that way.  Mealy, I mean.  Dunno why.

In good old South Jersey, our local apple orchard grew the fab. Molly Delicious.  Have never seen it anywhere outside So.Jo., but so big, so juicy.  I miss muchly.  Cue one dramatic tear.

There are lots of great regional apple varieties. I miss Macouns (as I mentioned) and Rhode Island Greenings - neither of which you see too many places outside of RI.

I really don't understand the English love of the Cox apple.  This is Steve's favorite & also his mother's & I reckon a lot of other UK folks too.  All but one of the Cox apples I have ever eaten were mealy & well - bleugh. :P

Do so many people actually like/prefer mealy apples? ???

I've had a few decent Cox apples. But then again, I've had a few decent Red Delicious, too. But I agree, Carolyn, both are seriously overrated in my book! From the US I miss the little Jonathan apples. I like my apples very crisp and tart/sweet.
