Nintendo DS Lite
« on: November 07, 2007, 12:48:58 PM »
Okay - easy question.  If my mother buys a Nintendo DS lite for my son from the US (or I buy a Japanese one from another website - cooler colours!), and we get this:

will that work for plugging it in/charging it up here in the UK without worry of burning it or the rest of the house up?

I'm an IDIOT when it comes to these things, so please keep answers as simple as possible, please!  [smiley=dunce.gif]

Child's birthday is next week, so any help would be appreciated!  Ta!

Would buying a UK charger not be a better idea?  They are pretty cheap from any video games store.

The converter should work though, i've never had any problem using them with small electrical goods.

I don't believe it really matters where you buy it as long as you have the UK charger (which you can buy virtually anywhere).  Don't quote me as gospel on that - DtM or Paul should be able to give you a definitive answer on that, but I remember that what we did with my old GameBoy Advanced.   ;)

The problem is, I'm not sure how all this works - if a UK charger will fry up a US console because of the voltage differences or whatever.  (And by the way, that converter was just an example.  Amazon are out of it...so I would be looking at a different one.)

Are you sure that the US or Japanese version doesn't come with a multi-voltage changer anyway?

I'd expect any portable electronic device I bought to come with an international charger.

Failing that the UK charger will be fine.

My sisters kids just used a plug adapter (don't know the technical term for it, but the thing that just allows you to use a US plug into a UK outlet) for their US origin DS and PSP's without any sort of  trouble.

That's exactly what I needed to know!  Thanks tonnes!

Dh has a UK Nintendo DS and I have a US one.  When we are in the US we use the charger for mine for both, and in the UK we use the charger that came with his.  We've not had a problem yet with them.

Thanks.  Do the games "transfer" as well?

We buy games in both countries, and they seem to work in either of ours.

Just to say, I bought a UK plug adapter for my DS Lite (one that plugs directly into the DS) for about £2 on Ebay. I originally bought a wall adapter, and that worked fine also but the American DS has a weird collapsible plug and it would often fall out of the adapter.

I did the exact same thing!
