...but the latter isn't showing the number on the database at the moment, probably because it's just been moved.
Ahh. This is probably the same reason why it wasn't coming up in my search, rather than it not being a BT line (as the two give the same error message). I wonder how long it'd take for a new line to come through...

I assume you were checking via the BT Wholesale database, unless your company is one of the LLU operators there.

They're usually on the database within about 24 hours, but sometimes there can be a delay.

I just checked again and it's listed now.  BT Wholesale is suggesting an anticipated 6Mbps+, which seems reasonable given the short loop length.  :)

No, we're a Tiscali wholesaler so I was using our internal check. But maybe that just feeds from the same BT search...

But that's great news on the speed front! You should be able to raise a ticket with Virgin with your findings and get them to change your line profile.

It would have to do that to make use of BT's line tests, otherwise it would only be a guess based upon the C.O. location and house address (like my suggestion of multi-megabit speeds earlier, before Geeta's phone number appeared in the database).   Which method they use, I wouldn't know.

I'd actually been with Tiscali for dialup service for about the last 3 or 4 years.  I tried to get DSL service with them, but I was told that as the cheapest package is for "up to 2Mbps" they now have a policy of not providing DSL unless they think speeds approaching that figure are attainable, even if the customer would be quite willing to settle for less at the same price.   It seems a daft policy to me, as they've now lost a customer, and I'm sure this must be happening all over the country.   It seems even more silly considering that we have no LLU out here, so they would be providing DSL via BT Wholesale anyway (who is providing my 576kbps service now, as I've gone over to BT as my ISP).

If you're reselling Tiscali services, I don't know if they would apply a similar restriction to you.

I've been lurking on the MoneySavingExpert.com site's forum doing research for my upcoming move. Virgin seems to have this issue pop up a lot which is why I've decided not to go with them. Sorry this has happened Geeta. :(

Geeta,

Any news on getting faster service?

Haven't had the service start yet in the new flat.  It was turned off in the old one on Wednesday, and is meant to start up in the new one next week.  I'll let you know how it goes.

My next task is trying to figure out how to choose a cable TV package!

Right, so service has now been established!  :)

However, it looks like it's getting 54 Mbps.  >:(

So what exactly should I tell Virgin when I call to complain?

54 meg?    I take it that's a typo.  Did you mean 54 kbps, or maybe 0.54 Mbps?   ???

Weird!  I'm looking directly at my connection and it says 54 Mbps?

Mine doesn't seem slow at all right now!  I like it.  But how can it be 54 Mbps? I thought 8 was the max? ???

I just had a thought (for both of you):   How are you obtaining this figure for speed?   Are you connecting to your ADSL modem/router via an Ethernet link?

If so, then I suspect you are probably looking at the LAN speed (i.e. the speed of the link between the modem/router and your computer), rather than the DSL line speed itself.

The ADSL2 standard actually provides the capability to go beyond that, but that doesn't apply to you.  The existing "ADSL Max" service, as BT refers to it, is indeed limited to 8Mbps as you say.
