enrolment deferment
« on: November 09, 2007, 03:04:42 AM »
I was recently accepted to my dream school but would like to defer enrolment until the following year, possibly even for two yrs. Does anyone know if this is possible? It's only a year-long MA program but I'm hoping to work and save enough money for tuition and living expenses. As the the dollar is spiraling downward, I think just one year of savings won't cut it.  :\\\'(

I think it will depend on the program and university. Two years is a very long deferment, though. I can't think I've ever been offered the option of deferring for that long -- the implication was just if I was going to wait that long to start, I'd need to reapply.

The best thing to do is probably talk to the department and/or admissions advisory people.

Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

Most universities would allow deferral initially for a full academic year, and some may allow a further year's deferral after that, but I agree you need to speak to the specific university you are thinking of.  Good luck with it.

I actually did the very same thing.  I applied in 2006 and got accepted and wrote the Uni to ask for deferment so I could start this year.  They didn't have a problem letting me do that for a year, so long as I stayed in contact and let them know if my status was changing.  I'm sure they didn't want to think I was coming and then find out last min. that I've changed my mind.

They told me (and this is just my Uni) that I could defer up to 2 years if I really needed to, but that was the max.  I also got the feeling that they were far more comfortable with a one year deferment.

I'm considering a two-year deferment though I'm a bit anxious about my language skills deteriorating because I speak Japanese almost daily and have to dumb down my English to be understood by the locals.  :-[   Finances are what's making me consider it.
