As far as popularity goes I would say no way Fosters! But definately Carling probably being the most popular because it's the cheapest. Then maybe Stella and Carlsberg.

But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Well and bear in mind that what some people think of as the best beer wouldn't necessarily be the most popular beer.  I'm not a beer drinker myself, but DH loves real ales from places like this:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

According to Wikipedia, Carling is the top selling lager in the UK, and Stella is the top selling "premium" lager.

I don't drink beer, but dh is a huge fan of the real ale from local breweries here.  We go to mostly brewery pubs.  He likes Centurion Ghost, Terrier, and black sheep are some.

You want to know about beer?  Take a seat!  And Peedal will be along soon to help, I am sure!

There are several different drinks which come under the general heading 'beer', several of which bear no relation to each other.

The main one would be lager.  This is a light, fizzy, gassy liquid which is usually golden in colour.  Most people in the UK seem to drink this.  Lager can be split into two categories - strong or 'premium' or regular.  Regular will be Fosters, Carling, Carlsberg...they are not too strong and (IMHO) have little flavour.  Stronger lagers are Stella Artois and Kronenberg, which have more flavour, and will get you more drunk.  Some people call Stella 'Wife Beater', for obvious reasons!

The next kind of beer is 'cask beer' or 'Real Ale'.  For everything you want to know about ales, look at www.camra.org  These are not fizzy, and are richer in flavour and usually darker.  There are thousands of ales, but most pubs in the UK will be tied to a chain so will serve a small selection such as Fullers or Youngs.  Black Sheep is one of these, and it is lovely.  Ales can range from pale and honey flavoured, to thick and dark with hints of coffe and raspberry...really, it is a subject worth researching, and I am sure that with enough looking around you would find something you like.

Other beers...there is Stout, which would include Guinness, and fruit beers, which are more readily available these days.  Also wheat beers, such as Hoegarden.

All of the above are available in cans and bottles in supermarkets and off-licenses.

My opinion - Fosters tastes like sheep pi$$.  Stick to Ale.   ;D

And a 'chav' is sort of like 'trailor trash', ie poor, common, badly brought up, on welfare, pregnant at 14....Britney with less money.

This post should go under the "just do it" thread!  ;)

Well said! and I agree with you about Fosters. I wont touch the stuff since the Great Fosters Incident of 2000. It involved me, a lot of Fosters, a bumpy cab ride and a very expensive dry cleaning bill.
I would say Stella and Carlsberg are very popular in my neck of the woods.

I don't drink beer but the husband is partial to Stella as a first choice with Kronenberg next...beyond that, good old Tennants!

DH is not allowed to drink Stella unless under strictly controlled circumstances. There's something chemically weird about it that makes some people become nasty. It's nicknamed Wife Beater (not that dh would ever take it to that extreme, but his tongue disengages from his head when he has too much of it).  ::) They all drink Carling at our local but I personally prefer London Pride or Guinness Red.

The bf and I were discussing that this weekend. How can Stella be that different from others? I mean, isn't beer/lager all basically the same formula? I'm curious!

As for him, he'll drink just about anything, depending on his mood. He likes Stella or Grolsch a lot of the time, but this weekend was in a Guinness mood. And sometimes he likes what I call Foul Beer (Tennant's Extra).

I generally drink about one beer every two years, so I don't think I count as a beer drinker.  :-\\\\

There is something about Stella. Its 5.2% which I believe is the highest of all the popular lagers. It gives me a headache the next day, even if I only drink a small amount and flush it through with water and Advil before bedtime.
