that reminds me... do we have creamed corn in tins here, or do i have to 'cream it' myself?
(never used it before, but a recipe i saw recently asks for it...)
I've gotten Green Giant creamed corn from Tesco before but I haven't seen it recently.

I have made this twice recently, one with fresh beans and one with frozen fine beans, and the fine beans that were frozen were soooo much better texture wise than the fresh ones. Strange, but true!!!

cooks illustrated has a great recipie i made long long ago.  it's got 2 different types of mushrooms, cream, garlic & onions.  the topping is breadcrumbs & fried onions.  i can pull it out if anyone wants it.

Sure why not...:-)  I love new recipes!

ok I am up in arms as to if I should try the broccoli chicken cheese one or the traditional green bean mushroom one. I have never made either, but both sound tasty!
Can anyone post the recipe (the easier the better) on here for each?
cheers!

Broccoli Casserole

20 oz broccoli (or broch/cauli mix)
1 can cream of chicken soup
Cheese Whiz eqiuvalent (the tubey squeezy stuff in the fridge section. I use the whole thing)
1-2 cans french fried onions

So easy. Just cook the fresh or frozen broc. In a separate saucepan, heat the soup and cheese together. Mix it together with the veg and put in a 13x9 pan and cover with the onions.  Bake at 350 until bubbly and onions browned - 20-30 minutes

If I wanted to add rice, when and how much do I add so that it doesnt
turn to rice paste glue?

Oh, i've never done rice. I'd cook up a cup's worth of rice and add it slowly before putting in the oven so that it doesn't overpower the sauce. Just add until it looks to be the right quantity - and reduce the cooking time in the oven. Really it only needs warming in the oven as everything is already cooked.. :)

I'm doing the green beans this year. In the past I've done the broccoli/rice casserole but with theh stuffing and potatoes the rice just adds more starchy carbs which tends to fill everyone up very quickly.
Why is it we have to stuff our faces on Thanksgiving anyway? Thanks for giving me the extra 5lbs!

my broccoli rice one I.......

Sautee diced onions and celery in a bit of butter add some garlic and cook until slightly done.

I boil about 1 1/2 cups rice until almost done
then I grate strong cheddar cheese and add to a mixing bowl along with the onions and celery, then I add the cream of chicken soup or if I am making for my SIL I use cream of veggie soup.

and while all this is happening I steam my broccoli and finally add it all together in the mixing bowl and if not soupy enough I add some milk.

Throw it all in a baking dish and add some more cheese on top and bake till all bubbly

I get creamed corn at the big Sainsbury's here.  My local one doesn't carry it.  I've also seen it at Tesco's.  it's Green Giant, just like in the US.

I'v been meaning to post here how I made our green bean casserole in the end, it was total improvisation as I forgot the Campbell's soup. I fried a little chopped onion and a few chopped mushrooms. When softened, I added a small tub of double cream, plus the cooked beans (fresh green beans, cooked in water for about 20 mins).  Put in a casserole dish, topped with crispy onions, bake for 20 mins or so, voila!  It was a lot tastier than making it with the soup so I'll be doing this way all the time now.
