Help! First aid for bad fall
« on: November 20, 2007, 07:00:04 PM »
I took a bad tumble today at Plymouth Uni. I think it was the uneven pavement. My left knee took the brunt of the force, which is not insignificant given given a) I'm not exactly petite and b) I'm pregnant.  :(

My knee is bruised and swollen and already quite stiff. What should I do? I can't take any pain killers (except paracetamol I think). But should I apply cold or heat? Keep it raised?

It REALLY hurts.  :\\\'(

(I never fell during my first pregnancy, this is now my second tumble with this one!)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Keep it raised and stick an ice pack on it (frozen peas are good for this!).

Hope you feel better soon! Everyone around here seems to be in the wars lately.

R.I.C.E.

Rest Ice Compression Elevation.

Ice is very important because it keeps the swelling down.

Sit with your feet up (when else are you going to get that excuse?) and put a pillow under your knee to raise it up.

if you have a tensor bandage, wrap it around your knee for compression.

I don't have any advice to offer other than what's already been said ... just take care of yourself!

When I fall (and this is often), I use this and it works a treat! Sorry to hear about your tumble!

You know, you might want to give your OB a call.  Even if it is to just speak with an advice nurse.  I am assuming that this sort of service is available where you are.  If it is, it won't cost anything and it might ease your mind.
FYI....I'm not vain, this is meaning of my last name :)

As Mrs Pink said: RICE.   ;D  As First Aiders we can't prescribe anything, but Paracetamol is safe to take during pregnancy.   ;)  If you're still concerned I'd make an appointment to see your local GP just to make sure you don't have more damage than you think...

Feel better soon!
