Ah, bliss!

I am currently doing serious damage to half a batch of Nestle toll house cookies! Instant taste of home though I always add a bit of oatmeal and raisins to them. Now I have to either order more bags of chips or bribe someone to bring them on their next trip over!

Tip you may know: in order to keep myself from eating the whole batch, I freeze half of it. I even know one person who freezes them in cookie size balls and just pops a couple in the oven when she's got a craving!

I LOVE my toll house cookies. And each time I'd visit the States, I'd bring back more morsels. Then I'd try to make the cookies. No good. Flat, awful. Even the taste wasn't right. So the last time I came back, I picked up a bag of Gold Medal flour. SUCCESS! Those were the best d*mn cookies I have had in years!

How sad is this?
I've never made them, ever, in my life!
I brought a HUGE bag of Nestle semi sweet morsels back with me when i was in the States in Feb, intending to try to make the cookies, but they are still sat there, unopened.

I'm gettting closer... i've at least read the recipe now.  Just have a question for you... it says use butter or margarine... which do you think gives a better result?
And has anyone ever substituted the butter/margarine with shortening / white Flora?

Go for it Broxi!  ;D I use real butter as I have a thing about margarines. And honestly, I guesstimate the amount as I haven't sat down to figure out what 2 sticks of butter equals in grams (I will if you want a little help though!).

LisaE, can't believe you used American flour!  ;D I've never had that trouble but maybe it's because I do often add other things to make them chunkier.

I use Stork baking margerine (in the tub).  I've used shortening though and I've used 1/2 cup shortening with 1/2cup marg.  Never used butter though, but I don't see why not.  I do use strong white bread flour though instead of plain flour.  That seems to help the flatness.

balmerhon...I think we were separated at birth. I don't do margarine either. Give me real stuff.

I add stuff to mine too, nuts, basically. Still flat on UK (strong bread) flour, except for the bumps of nuts. I can't do a Victoria Sponge, either. Me and UK flour...all I can do is bread with it.  :-/

Butter will give a crisper cookie, margerine a softer one.  Butter cookies seem to me to go stale faster.  That is if they have a chance to hang around. :P

This thread made me laugh...as I am not a sweet person normally, but ever since I first started baking by myself (about age 11) I have made toll house cookies atleast once a month. Mostly for the dough! Of course the recipe is firmly commited in my memory. Now my daughter makes them on her own (mostly for the dough) and the twins make them with me every few weeks (they also want the dough!) Anyway...I was so sad about not finding Nestle morsels in the UK. (The bags of other choc. chips were so small...and expensive!)

Last week I sat down and thought about all the foods I need to bring with me when I move over this summer, and of course I wrote down a bag of Nestle morsels a month (plus maybe a few for holiday baking!)

(Along with some Old Bay seasoning, apple pie seasoning, a few boxes of Kraft mac and cheese for the twins...gross I know, maybe some Goldfish crackers as they kept asking for them every time we shopped...a few other items...)

Modified to add: I only use butter...and two sticks equal one cup, which is why I already have a set of american baking cups over there so I don't have to figure out the conversion!

I too am a butter peep except for olive oil margarine at times.  

Lisa have you tried chilling the dough for a while before?  Sometimes varying humidities can have an impact too.  I have had the same problem with my Toll House here.  I chilled the dough and that helped. Just a thought.

I just made Heath Peanut Butter cookies.  Yummy!

And yes indeed I can be bribed.  For Walkers crisps or Kinder Bueno Bars.  ;D

In addition to the Toll House morsels, I've also got Hershey Cinnamon Chips that i bought from

Broxi...they are heavenly and I make the oatmeal ones on the back of the package.  The people at my husbands work are addicted to them.  I will give you one warning and say that if you do make the recipe make sure to eat them fast because even the next day or two they tend to fall apart and get dry.
