ebay worked for me
I sold mine on Ebay.  I was really happy to get $100 back on my $500 dress.

I bought mine at a boutique shop, but I had done a lot of research on-line first.  Of the dresses I picked out, none of them were anything like what I ended up with.  I didn't think I would look good strapless, I was wrong. ;D

Most of the brands I looked at had stocklists, so I went to a few places in London that were listed.

I bought mine in the posh-frocks section of a department store.  It wasn't a bridal gown, just a cream-coloured tea-length dress with a lace bodice and voile skirt.

I bought it in a boutique in New York, but the designer is actually British. So much like my husband, my dress also had to make the journey from the UK for the wedding.

It was the first dress I tried on. I tried on a few others, and figured why bother continuing, when the first one was exactly what I was looking for. I am incredibly indecisive, so this really caught me off guard! Was in and out in about 1/2 hour. Granted the saleslady was extremely knowledgable and good at her job, so when I described what I was looking for, she found it right away.

I know what you mean, Kate! The dress I chose was the first one I took a close look at. I phoned up my mum straight away and told her "I want that one, oh my god oh my god, look at it!". I feel so silly sometimes, as I'm not terribly girly  :-[ Haha!

And yes, Carol! Butterflies is the one! I love it =]
It was most definitely...a THING.

I actually bought 2 dresses - one as a traditional wedding dress and one just for fun - off ebay.  I ended up wearing the 2nd dress - paid $15 and it needed no alterations.  Not a traditional

I sold the 1st dress back on ebay - paid about $100 with alterations.

You could try out Pronuptia.  Make an appointment, tell them your budget and then they'll bring dresses within that budget.

I had mine made - but that's cause I did the Indian bride thing.

We had a 19 month engagement so I had plenty of time to research! I spent 6 months trying on dresses in various shops, looking online, etc. Finally, on a whim my mom and I went into a boutique on Michigan Ave in Chicago and bingo, found it! As it was a shop in downtown Chicago I totally thought they were going to be WAY out of my price range and really snobby, but the women were all absolutely lovely. It cost $1150, but I had buttons added all down the back which cost $100 extra. Worth every penny too as I felt like a queen on our wedding day and even got to wear it again for our UK blessing. Bargain! ;D

I bought mine at a local boutique near my parents in suburban Boston.  It's the same shop where everyone from town gets their dresses.  It has everything from the Alfred Angelo destination collection which is pretty affordable to big designer merangue things that cost thousands.  You'll be able to tell right away which dresses are out of your budget.  But don't worry try them all on.  Then you know what styles look best and you can go out and find a cheaper version.

As for London - I went to a few boutiques and department stores with friends.  I knew I was NEVER going to buy here, but it was fun to go with a girlfriend and try on.  Pronovias at Harrods was wonderful.  The girl was very helpful and the dresses were gorgeous.  They didn't make me feel uncomfortable about trying things on and I was fairly open that I was looking in the US too.  The only problem with trying on dresses in London is that you HAVE to have an appt and if you are looking at Saturdays, you will be waiting 4 weeks minimum from when you call.  i.e. don't expect to call up on Wednesday for an appt on Saturday.
