I really, really like Delia Smith books.

Her recipes are all easy to follow, no faffy ingredients and they always come out.

I know this might not be to everyones taste but I've found that Jamie Olivers recipes are ALWAYS spot on.  They're easy, tasty, and I have yet to be unhappy or dislike something I have cooked from his cookbooks.  I will say that I cook every.single.day and I try to use different recipes so that we don't get bored.  We only have his first three books but I'm seriously considering buying his most recent ones.  The only reason I haven't is that I have soooo many cookbooks.  Then I think of all the recipes I've tried from the other books and not liked them or they were difficult to follow or actually left something really important out!

so my vote
Jamie Oliver

edited to add
reread this and thought it might have sounded like others didn't cook everyday.  Just wanted to emphasize that I try to use a different recipe at least 2 times a week.

I'm not a Jamie Oliver fan at all, but I agree with Lindyloo, a Jamie Oliver book would be good for your son. He annoys the poo out of me, but I could see him being an inspiration to a young man that likes to cook.

I hear you Pam.

But Jamie's Italy is a great Italian cookbook.  Yummy recipes!

But isn't he the "Naked Chef"...wouldn't that appeal only to a certain type of male??  :P

I do think it's good that we hear more about male chefs, it does help the boys realize that it's not just for girls!

The naked refers to the fact that he uses basic ingredients and keeps the food as natural as possible.

When I first heard of the show, I thought that's what it meant!!! I thought he was going to undress. But as it is, I can't stand him so it was no great disappointment that he didn't!

aaaw poor Jamie!  Give the poor guy a break- he's going to end up looking like his dad!
I guess I'm in the minority- I think he's great.  Nigella on the other hand gets on my nerves- if I see her eating on public transportation one more time I might just hurl.

Tomorrow's Observer has a 'baking with kids' supplement which might be good.

I think Delia is a bit faffy (for me, yet alone a small boy!).

I totally agree about Nigella. The scene at the end of her show when she is in her nightgown, shoving something into her gob, makes me ill.

What about The River Cottage Family Cookbook, MrsP?

I did think this too until I saw the show, then I figured it out!

I don't know if you want to do this right now, but I thought this is pretty cool. You can put all of your favourite recipes into your own professional cookbook.

That is soooooo cool!!  I will definitely keep that in mind for the future because I definitely want to 'give' my kids my/their favourite recipes.
