For the love of Samson
« on: November 24, 2007, 12:07:27 PM »
We've been having some discipline problems with our German Shep, Samson with him pulling at the lead and nipping at the kids. But the nipping has gotten worse as Samson has gotten older. He doesn't mean to hurt anyone but he considers the kids as one of his puppy brothers and is just playing but it's starting to get out of hand. Also since we moved in he's been head butting the fence panel leading to next doors three dogs. I know he's just being territorial but he's going to go through that fence eventually and there's going to be a huge problem when he does. I called our breeder and spoke to her German Shep trainer and the trainer is going to start training Samson at breeders farm in Leicester every Saturday for two hours for just £7.50!
But in the meantime if anyone has any tips for me please give me a shout!

Does your dog need training? I can talk to the breeder when I go on Saturday. I think she only offers training for dogs from her litters but I'll be happy to check! She's in Coalville. Do you know where that is? Glebe Farm. She has a website but I think it may be down. www.gleebevonwood.co.uk

Do you watch the Dog Whisperer?  I think it would help a bit... although fixing problems goes too fast on the show.  I haven't had a dog for yogs, but it seems like yours is trying to be the 'leader', when he should be a follower in the family.  The territorial stuff could be from a few things.  Insecurity, not as much exercise as he needs... Your trainer will hopefully sort it out!

I wish there were cat trainers.

I watch it occasionally but I don't really think watching that program would help much. Dogs like kids all have different personalities. I think samson needs one on one training for awhile as he's already 18 months old and pretty set in his ways.
The trainer suggested maybe having him neutered to stop all that testosterone flowing and making him so territorial. She has a good point so we're probably going to check out that option. It's a shame to have him 'fixed' because he really is a gorgeous dog and would make nice puppies but we just can't have that!

Hi! Hate to butt in here, but I just have to put it out there that "the dog whisperer" should never be what anyone goes by in regards to training their pets. Cesar Millan uses very dangerous "techniques" that are not only unreliably effective - but very unpleasant for the dogs involved. He has no credentials, and has in fact recently been sued for seriously injuring a dog in his care (http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-05-05-dog-whisperer_x.htm). I am currently attending veterinary school at the University of Florida and my board certified behaviorist professor uses Cesar Millan's "Dog whisperer" DVDs to show veterinary students what *NOT* to do when training animals!!

I wish there were cat trainers.

You can train your own cat! Especially if they are very food motivated, my cats will do tricks for pieces of *their own food* silly little beasts that they are. If chickens, rhinos, ostriches and antelopes can be trained...so can cats! check this link out if you are interested :-)

I think the trainer is right about neutering helping with these issues.  I'd have it done a.s.a.p.

Thanks for the link on cat training Reinadeluz!!  My kitty is generally well behaved but has a few issues id like to solve... so it made for an interesting read  :)

Pebbles, I think neutering will DEFINATLY help with Samson's behavior and make him less wild and aggresive.  I used to work at a humane society in the US for years and it definately made a big difference in about 90% of the dogs (because every dog was spayed/neutered before it was adopted out). Best of luck to you and Samson!

Too bad about that Dog Whisperer guy.. I've watched the show a few times and thought he was OK.  (For diagnostics, anyways, we don't really see much of the training.)  Some of his ideas we used on horses and cattle, like exercise before training and distraction when misbehaving.  (Mostly turning, not shock collars.. did I read that right??)  We never trained our dogs, besides getting them used to harnesses and leads.  They seemed to pick up a lot from the other dogs.  They weren't really pets, though.  We had one problem dog, but he didn't last long.  Dad said he'd sent him back to the breeder.. never did believe that story.

As for cat training, my cat is perfectly well-behaved if someone is watching her.  It's the paw prints on the counters that give her away... and the missing wallpaper.  I tried  toilet training, what a disaster.  She's blind and at least a bit deaf now, so it's time to give up.

Chickens?  I've had them come when called, ride on my shoulders, and go to sleep when asked, but I've recently heard that you can litter train them.  Anyone had success with that?  I have friends that need to keep the chicks in the house at night, and it's a squishy world...

The Dog Whisperer's training methods are considered highly controversial in the rescue community too, for the reasons Reinadeluz mentioned.

As for litter training chickens, I've heard of it being done for ducks kept as indoor pets, so why not?  There are even diapers used on indoor ducks.

Spay/neuter can make a huge difference in an animal's personality.  I've seen it in rabbits, as well as cats and dogs.

Samson had his first training session today. He did very very well despite lots of other dogs barking everywhere. I even saw his father who is pure white and his brother who has the same face as Samson. He had a good day and loved the ride in the car to Leicester.
