My doggie is gone... :(
« on: November 26, 2007, 10:48:52 AM »
This weekend really sucked. After a 5 hour trip to the Paeds A&E near Ikea for my 8 month old who suffered a fall onto a hard floor on Sat we fast forward to Sunday ...

We really needed to weed the tiny front garden so I go out to do it and I take the dogs out with me. I block most of our gate (iron so there's space between the bars) with a trash can and the dogs are pretty good so I really didn't expect issues. I turned around to check on them occasionally and would say "stay in the gate doggies" to them often. More just in case because we never thought they would actually go anywhere.

Well, one time I turn around and I see Chip standing in front of our door looking like he really wants to go in. My first thought is that Daniel let Pepper in but Chip missed out so wanted to go in too. So, I ignore him for a few minutes and then finally check to see if Pepper is inside and let Chip in. I'm sure you've guessed it by now. Pepper is gone. We hunted for her for 2 hours and no luck. We called the RSPCA and the Dog Warden to report her missing. She is microchipped but not registered to our address. Her collar tag is from before we moved and we hadn't updated it yet. The only thing remaining to do is put up flyers. We're sad, especially for Chip who has ALWAYS had her around. As much as she gets on our nerves no one ever wants their dog to be lost and not know if they're ok or not.

Well, that's it. I should start living as a hermit to minimize risk but there's no fun in that. Well, its about time to push out that code change and try to stop seeing visions of Annika on the floor at Ikea. I've already managed to not think about what Pepper could actually be going through at the moment. My brain glosses over it but I don't allow it to linger and really process it. Its working so I don't plan on fighting it.

But can you contact the microchip people and update your info now?

Call the microchip company NOW and tell them what has happened and get your contact details in their database.  So if she does come up on the system, they can track you.

Put posters up everywhere and stop in at the shelters and police station.  Let EVERYONE know you are looking for your dog.  Also, There are dog forums where you can post about your dog.

Our dog was gone for 4 days once, and it was someone who saw the posters who found him and called us.  I was absolutely sick with worry.

I hope she comes home but sometimes they need help to find their way.  I'm praying for you and her!

I'm really hoping he comes home soon! My dog bolted out the door when he was only about 7 months old and he was gone most the day.I freaked out. He hadn't left my sight since he was 10 weeks old. After a good combing of the area I just gave up. Later that day when I came home from picking the kids up from school I found our stupid Samson waiting by the front door. I calmly coaxed him into the house before ripping into him!

Does anyone have the number to the microchip company by the way? I better have our address changed before Samson escapes for another joy run

I hope that after you update your info with the microchip company, whoever finds your dog will have the sense to take her to the vet. You never know, Julia--Pepper could just pop up on your doorstep at any minute. Good luck.

Which company did you use? There are a few different microchip brands. But if you know the name of yours, you can usually find it online and update your info there.

HomeAgain when we were in the US because its chips are readable abroad.

I use Petlog. I just called them and upgraded my service to include lost pet finder help!

Try to keep calm Julia. Hopefully he's just out for a stroll and will come home when he gets hungry.

There are a few that are readable abroad, Julia, but I used Home Again as well!  :)

Is there a local website or two?  The ones in our area work very well for finding lost pets, especially if you post a photo.  Hoping for a happy ending!

Oh, no! :(

The HomeAgain number is 1-888-551-3903 - I just updated the boys' chip info last week.

Good luck - I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you, Chip and Pepper!

Julia,

I can imagine how you must feel.  By the time you read this, I hope Pepper is home!

Please also check in with local vets -- people may bring him in to have him checked if they find him or put up flyers there saying they have found him.  I would think that at the local churches or shops people may put up found signs too.

Dogs are really good about finding their way home, even if it's a new place you've moved to, so keep that in mind.

Our cat Waldo was gone for three days while my parents were watching him and he's a house cat and not familiar with the area, let alone being outside.  He found his way back.  Pepper will remember the smell & the surroundings of his home.

Please keep us posted....... also, I hope your child is doing okay after the fall.  What a weekend you must have had!

Caroline & Brendan
