Bizarre Cadbury's commercial
« on: December 02, 2007, 11:17:12 PM »
Is it just me, or do you find something bizarre about the gorilla sitting silently while Phil Collins sings "In the Air Tonight"? I love that commercial, although there's no way my mind can link it to Cadbury's chocolate. Supposedly, a drummer from a famous band was in the gorilla suit.

Penguin (you've changed your name),

I'm content to see that commercial on the rare times it's shown in its entirety. I'd love to know who the drummer in the suit is...

I seen on TV the reasoning behind it..

The dude who plays the gorilla isn't a famous drummer. but is actually a famous gorilla actor, he acts in movies like planet of the apes...and other films that involve apes/monkeys/gorillas...he had to take lessons to play drums for the commercial.

anyway - basically cadbury said the reason for the silly commercial, is because the commercial supposedly makes you smile...just like chocolate

the bloke who plays him garon michael, is quite fit as well! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=481196&in_page_id=1773

dont know about chocolate...but he sure makes me smile!

What's even funnier are the "tributes" to the commercial which there are a few of on Youtube.

It's a waste to hide that guy in an ugly gorrilla suit, isn't it?

Me too!

I wanted to add that I've seen that commercial several times before it actually hit me what they were trying to sell.

I enjoy the ad, because it is interesting to watch, but I did not go out and buy any chocolate because of it.  And as other posters have already mentioned, I had to see it a few times before I remembered what was being advertised.  Yet, I read in the paper yesterday that Cadbury's profits are up in the last quarter, and they attribute it to the Gorilla ad.

I think it's great. It was a bold move by Cadbury to greenlight it and it worked, look at how much people are talking about it. Frankly, I doubt it's about increasing their sales numbers that much. They have huge market recognition already. It's just about keeping Cadbury's name out there.

What I LOVE is that Mr Gorilla Man really studied video of Phil Collins. I'm positive I've seen footage of Collins doing that shoulder shrug and neck stretch prior to actually playing. Great attention to detail for those of us 80s geeks who remember seeming him performing this!! :D
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
