Super Shuttle from Heathrow???
« on: December 12, 2007, 01:09:53 PM »
Does anyone know if there’s a Super Shuttle-like service from Heathrow?
We’re travelling on Boxing Day and cab prices are murder!

Not that I've ever heard of. Where are you going? Trains will probably be running - only on bank holiday schedules. Sometimes a bus is the most direct way - we actually have one that goes almost door-to-door with no changes. Are you only checking black cabs or have you tried private hire cars?

We called two minicab companies and they want about £76 from Heathrow to either South London or Surrey (we're going to DH's mother's house, just not sure if it's most cost effective to go there directly or go home to London first).

We can do a very messy tube ride - Picadilly to District/Circle Line to Victoria station - Victoria line isn't running, so would mean an overground change from there.  It'd be fine except we're taking a red-eye and most likely lugging a ton of stuff so would be nice to avoid if possible.

Thanks

That's a pretty long drive - it may be more to do with the mileage than the day.... It also could be that some cabs charge "dead time" which is the time it would take them to get back to their home patch from wherever they take you.... What about a train rather than the tube? Heathrow Express would get you to... Kings Cross? Is that right? And from there you might be able to get a train.

Paddington. I always use it when I'm traveling back to the UK. It's fabulous! And so quick and easy!

Not running on Boxing Day - there's bus replacement service.  And to be honest, would be more of a nightmare to get back from Paddington then to just take the tube and deal with the changes to Victoria.

London Overground is not running at all.  And both cab companies are charging double what they normally would because of the holiday.

Are the coaches running from Victoria on Boxing Day?

What a nightmare! Hope you find a relatively easy way to wherever you are going.  No advice here :/

I'm lazy and would probably just pay for the cab.....have you tried calling around to a few different mini cab companies?

What about hiring a car and driving yourselves?  I know it's not fun after a long flight but it may be cheaper than a cab.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

I would definitely take a cab.  To be honest, it will probably be worth it in the end, especially given you are going at an early time and you have a lot of luggage.

Would taking a cab to Gatwick and then the Gatwick-Heathrow shuttle be an option?

I second that!! I always try to take public transport to the airport when I can since I have less luggage but I learned my lesson the hard way and now appreciate every penny I spend for the cab home. Struggling with luggage to save a few quid is not worth it because you will just end up more stressed. I usually calculate the additional transportation costs to my plane ticket and then decide if I can afford the trip. It helps to think of it that way.

Yeah, to get to the District line from Heathrow Express, you'd be hauling your suitcases down an escalator, up a flight of stairs and then down another.

Sigh. The one good thing about Heathrow Express was that it always ran on Christmas day. Now I have to deal with some cramped bus service.

Do we actually know the destination yet?
