Chinese food in Scotland really isn't chinese
« on: December 13, 2007, 09:32:53 PM »
Maybe it's because I was visiting just outside of Glasgow but the Chinese food in the restaurants are not even close to authentic.  I ordered orange chicken, well I got flat pieces of fried chicken, sort of with orange slices on top.  Ordered egg foo young at a sit in type place and got what appeared to be scrambled eggs.  Only thing decent was the fried rice.  Man how I'm going to miss America.  Oh and the silly non mixer tap is also buggin the hell out of me.

Not that it wasn't authentic.  Just that it's not even close to what it should be.  I'm half
Chinese so I should know :) at least know half haha

Pity there isn't one in Glasgow, but I can certainly vouch for the jasmine tea.

We use a pretty good Chinese takeaway in Culloden.  They don't have a huge range of dishes but what they have is OK. But then I'm not Chinese, so I wouldn't really know if it's authentic or not. The people who run it are though so I guess they should know what they are doing.

On another note, Indian food in Scotland is FAB!

Ah, but most of it is Bangladeshi, not Indian!

 :P

You CAN get REAL Chinese food in Glasgow, but you won't always.  You have to shop around.

I'd like to see you tell all the CHINESE people in Loon Fung in Sauchiehall Street that their food isnt authentic Chinese!

The Indian-sub-continent restaurants in Scotland are FAB!  [smiley=bootyshake.gif]

A lot of London Indian is Bangla too, and nothing against it, but it's just not to my taste.  (and is usually meat-based as well)

Where is the achari (curry) from? That's my favourite! So yummmmmmmy! I've only had it in Scotland, never saw it down south.

Ooh, i love achari as well... now you mention it, i've never seen it outside of Scotland.   I make it at home sometimes, by stirring lime pickle into the curry once i've cooked it.

'Achaar' is the Hindi word for 'pickle' in English, meaning the stuff you get in a jar from Pataak's or any of those Indian food manufacturers.  So it's not a dish from any region, it just means that the dish has achaar in it.   :)  I put achaar in some of my dishes like cauliflower or potatoes.

Oh I see! Well I love it!!! That's probably because I love lime pickle. Which reminds me, all the Tescos here have got rid of their Asian food to make way for Polish food, I am really annoyed as there isn't really anywhere to buy all that good stuff around here!  :(
