I've read this!!! My US friends and I have been emailing back and forth like mad about it! Lots of the names are people I used to be friends with back in my baseball days: Roger Clemens (whom I didn't know very well), Mo Vaughn, Gregg Zaun, Jason Grimsley, Josias Manzanillo, Todd Pratt, etc. Actually, given the nature of the game and the pressure to keep up, it's not all that surprising. And knowing some of the people involved, it's pretty obvious to see that something drastic changed in their physical appearance that couldn't be explained by working out alone. Plus, it was common knowledge among teammates that certain players were using 'legal' steroids. We all knew about it and accepted it, to be honest, besides a bit of eye rolling. It was primarily 'andro' back then, which team doctors and trainers would obtain for any player who wanted it.
But Gregg Zaun? He was silly and totally nuts, but never very steroid-y looking! That one did surprise me.
As for the section of the Mitchell Report about other drug use, drug testing in baseball is an utter joke. It's technically 'random' testing, but I've never heard of any player who wasn't given ample warning on the down-low (by some team employee) well in advance of his test. They all knew and all had plenty of time to clean out their systems. If they were pressed for time, they used the white vinegar trick, which worked a charm. Any player caught for drug use had to be pretty thick. I didn't know too many players who didn't use drugs of some form. They did exist, but were in the minority. I'm out of the loop now, but I'd be surprised if much has changed on this front.
