Flat terminology...
« on: December 19, 2007, 03:58:44 PM »
I'm beginning the hunt for a flat, just so I can have some idea of where I can afford and how much, but the terminology is confusing me.

The terms I'm being faced with are:
1/2/3 br flat - obviously 1/2/3 br apts, I got that :)
Bedsit single/double/triple - I understand that these are sleeping and living accomodations in a larger house, minus a kitchen and WC. Not sure what the single/double/triple refers to.
Ensuite single/double/triple -???
Flatshare single/double/twin - ???
Room single/double/triple - ???
Roomshare single/double/triple - would this be like dorm-style living, two single beds with a stranger?
Studio single/double - like a studio apt, with kitchen(ette) and WC and room for a double or single bed?

I'm from Manhattan so I understand tiny apartments. In fact, I lived in a 175 sq ft apt for three years! I just need help with the terminology.
Thanks in advance!

I was always under the impression that a bedsit and a studio were the same thing.... but maybe not!

single/double anything means that there's room for a single or double bed.  Not sure what the triple is about though.

Flatshare- sharing an apartment with roommate(s).
Now a triple citizen!

A bedsit is usually a room in a house which may have some cooking facilities but shared bathroom and may also be a shared kitchen.  A studio is a self contained flat with a bed/sit/kitchen as one room and a sep bathroom.

Ensuite single would mean a single room with en suite bathroom, ensuite double = double room with en suite bathroom etc.

Flatshare single/double/twin - probably means a room in a shared flat and the room is single or double or twin

Hope that hepls!

To me, a bedsit was just a a tiny bedroom with maybe a tv but you shared the bathroom with other bedrooms.  A studio to me was a small open plan "apartment" with everything right as you saw it.  No rooms, except maybe the bathroom might be it's own entity.

Ensuite single/double means you have your own bathroom.

Oh and a triple usually means the room is furnished with 3 single beds.

Be warned - when they say single sized bedroom, they mean it.  "single" means that only a twin bed will fit.

Thank you! This is so helpful.
Also, imagine my horror at returning to a single bed after two decades in a double. This will certainly make my decision. Ah, London.

A bedsit doesnt have to be tiny!
I had a beautiful bedsit in Glasgow with a huge bay window, a double bed, chest of drawers, 3-seater couch, dining table & 2 chairs, cooker, sink and even a walk-in closet.

Have heard things are bigger in Scotland.  The few I have seen in the London area (including the very first one DH was in when he moved to London) were so small it was lucky you could even get a single bed in with chair to sit on.  It might be depend on the area as well as bedsit to bedsit
