Help! Moving to the UK as spouse of British Citizen
« on: December 21, 2007, 02:10:13 PM »
Hi,

My apologies if there is already a thread relating to this, but I couldn't find one.

Here's the situation - I am a British Citizen living in the US for the last 6 years with my US spouse.  We are planning on relocating back to the UK next year and I'm just trying to figure out what paperwork we need to fill out to get my US spouse into the UK.  I thought I was pretty good at this having figured out how to get myself over here, but I'm just feeling lost!

A lot of the immigration websites I have seen are assuming that I am already in the UK and I'm applying for my US spouse to join me over there.  Given that we'd like to return simultaneously, I'm not sure how to go about that.  Also, our son was born three months ago.  If I get him his British passport that should be all I need to do, is that right?

Any help/useful links would be much appreciated!

Start with www.ukvisas.gov.uk  You need to make sure that you can afford to support yourselves int he UK and have somewhere to live in advance of coming over.

There is a lot of info on here from people who are applying for spouses to join them in the UK, so have a good read.

All your child needs is a passport.

It's probably best if you went to the UK first and maybe find a job and place to live unless you have a sizeable savings account.  Your husband will join you shortly thereafter.

This isn't necessary if you have a job offer or sufficient savings.

yes that's why I said "sizeable savings account"  :)  But really though they don't even specify what sufficient is anywhere on their site.  I guess everything is at their discretion.

Sorry, for some reason my brain totally didn't register the second half of your sentence!

Actually, ironically enough, his company is relocating us to the UK so we do have a job offer for him, but not for me!  Do I need to have a job to sponsor him?

I suppose that perhaps that should be the other part of my question - is it easier for him to get a work permit through his company, or though his marriage to me?

Through marriage, definitely, providing the job is well paid enough.

You don't need a job as well if his salary will support you all.
