Question about homeagain chips?
« on: December 31, 2007, 08:41:18 PM »
I'm moving to the UK in 2008. My pet dog has a homeagain microchip. I read that ISO 11784 & 11785 are the suitable microships but also read that some microchip readers are not able to read 9 or 10 digits microchips. My dog has a 9 digits. Have anybody had any trouble getting their dog in the UK with this kind of microchip?. Are customs authorities microchip readers able to read this device?

thanks ahead for yours replies!!!

My dog has a homeagain chip and was fine coming into the UK (spring 2006).

Your best bet is to call the pets scheme centre at the airport you'll be flying to and ask what type of readers they have.  If they don't have the reader that will read your pet's chip, then you should be able to rent or buy one.

Thanks for you reaply. Yeah, I was thinking that too. It's better be sure that they'll be able to read the information. I really don't want my dog in qarantine.

Thanks again and Happy New Year!!!

I think most people on this board have homeagain chips. My dog(s) do and we had no problems with British Airways or the SeaFrance ferries.

I got worried also about the microchip reading at port of entry. My dog has also a Homeagain chip, and I managed to find out that the manufacturer of my dog's chip was Digital Angel Corp. (please, be aware that your dog could have a different one, even if it's a Homeagain chip). Anyways, I called Digital Angel and explained my story, they told me that for people travelling overseas they are able to lend a reader. Of course you have to leave a reimbursable deposit (in case something happens to the reader), but once you return the reader to the US, they give you backk all the money.
I didn't end up using this option because we hired a pet relocation company that did all the stuff.

Hope it helps :)

Thanks you guys. Caroeh what pet relocation company did you use? Did they do all the paperwork?, Where it's located? How much did they charge you for all the service? I'm sorry for too manny question but I'm really concern about my spoiled dog. I don't know if he will cope with the move. We live in Georgia, I heard about pet land moving services in Atlanta but not about results with this company. I will travel first, then my husband will send the dog.

That shouldn't have been necessary! DEFRA is pretty clear about which chips are OK and, in my recollection, nobody on UKY has had any problem bringing their chipped pets over.

Do they both have the same microchip number?
