The trouble with QS is everyone makes a grab for the Noisette Triangles and stuff and all that is left are the dang caramel disks.

I love those! I dug those out first!

Do you have the tradition of a tin of sweets in the US at Christmas as well?

It's just not Christmas without that and the double edition of the TV guide!

Like others said, it is more of the sampler boxes than tins. The candies aren't individually wrapped in the boxes either. I, personally, don't like many of the candies and not all of them come with a map that tells what each type of candy is.

My step-grandfather sometimes brought a box of Lindt or Godiva chocolate.  ;D

See's all the way.

we always had a huge box of See's at Christmas when i was growing up, but TBH, i didnt really like those either.   And the shops are verging on sinister!

I agree. See's all the way. I brought some back for my team and yet they still dip into the Roses.  ??? Too fresh for them I suppose.  ;)

I would always bring back a handpicked box of See's for my coworkers, who would CHARGE the kitchen the moment they knew I'd put them in there (my boss getting first choice, of course!).  They went CRAZY over the Rocky Road.

What's wrong with the shops? I've never been in one.

I kind of think See's are over-rated, though. (ducks and runs for cover)  ;)

That's fine.  More for us!

For me, it's just been instilled since (before) childhood... it was my grandparents' favorite, my mom's favorite... always was a special 'treat' we only had at holidays and family trips.
I have always gotten a kick out of being able to point to a piece and test my mom - she can tell you exactly what it is EVERY time.

You mean how the shop is decorated sterile white and black trimmed and the matching white and black trimmed uniform of the employee who hands you a free chocolate to bait you when you are placing your order? Not to mention mama Mary peeking at you on every box and large portrait on the wall. Yeah I can sorta see what you mean.  ;)

Same here!! It's a part of California history since the '20s. Growing up were weren't allowed sweets but every year at Christmas we were allowed a little nibble.

i saw Whitman Samplers on an expats online food shop and thought WTF?!?
Where i grew up, those were just the cheap chocolate that you would get in the drugstore.  Maybe they're viewed differently in other places.

Sorry I meant my parents went to the independent little chocolate shop by our house that makes all their own chocolates.

I do consider Whitman samplers to be mass produced and sort of gross, but then I feel the same way about Q-S and Roses in general.

The chocolate just doesn't taste very good to me.
