The Unicorn in Chorlton is a fantastic place, the closest to something like a wholefoods that you would get in the area. Also, Waitrose is okay, but if you want good produce, don't bother getting it at the supermarket, head over to your local greengrocer, butcher, fishmonger and buy from them. Support your local businesses!

My husband swears that reheated chicken is poison. We even asked the Tesco staff who were maning the rotisserie chickens and they confirmed his position. I have also noticed that most chicken and pre-packaged food labels do say "Do not reheat".

I have a friend who won't eat sweet potato skin because he said it is poisonous. Don'tcha think there would be a label?

Thousands of Americans reheat turkey after Thanksgiving. If you heat it well enough, you are fine.

Exploring the cheese counter is very fun. Have a look now because I noticed the speciality Christmas cheeses are on sale.

I'm still figuring this stuff out as you can tell. My husband refuses to go grocery shopping with me. Instead he just drops me off and tells me to call him when I'm done.  ::)

I like wandering the aisles. I wish I had a chauffeur in my early days.  ;) Hauling bags home alone is a drag.

I have some sliced cheese in the house that: a) doesn't actually taste like cheese; b) features slices that are stiff as cardboard; and c) despite one pack being bright orange and the other being pale yellow both taste the same.

Ah, see sliced cheese is processed crap - I've never eaten it in my life and I was born here [smiley=bleck.gif].

If you look on the Tesco website, you will find over 100 non-processed continental cheese varieties and 58 non-processed cheddar varieties. The Asda website appears to have a very large selection on non-processed cheeses too.

That brings me to another question: has anyone reheated chicken and eaten it? Please tell me it can be done.

Did you re-heat chicken when you were in the US?

Why buy that stuff when there's so much nice cheese?

The thing about re-heating chicken is that you really need to make sure it's re-heated all the way through.  The danger is when it's not reheated enough to zap all the germs.  That's when people get sick.

Ditto (well, I wasn't born here!).

As for brie - try the Somerset brie.  And don't assume that just because something is *cheaper* than you're used to in the US that it isn't of good quality.  Some things which are "posh" in the US diet can be more regular or accessible parts of the UK diet.

Don't buy processed cheese then!  ;D You are living in the land of a zillion cheeses, try some proper ones!

I freeze cooked chicken dishes and reheat in the oven or the steamer pan all the time. I wouldn't reheat more than once, though.

I don't understand either why you're buying sliced cheese - it's expensive processed crap.  I'm not keen on Asda but even our local one has a fresh cheese counter and plenty of good wrapped cheese.

...it's expensive processed crap.

Careful now, I know for a fact you have (or have had quite recently) Velveeta in your house... ;) :) :-*

I'm not a big Asda fan either, but ours stocks some gorgeous local Pembrokeshire cheddar that's to die for! And it's as good as much more expensive stuff I've bought from the deli!  :)

Strictly for a controlled scientific experiment though.  ;)

Of course I did. I think nuked leftovers are the only reason I made it through law school. During one of my initial visits here, my husband stopped me putting some take away chicken in the microwave and gave me a lecture on how it's poison. I didn't believe him, which is why I insisted we ask someone who works with chicken (in hindsight, maybe I should have asked a real butcher rather than ASDA/Tesco staff).

I admit that I have assumed that cheap food is bad food and have failed to spend much time at the deli counter. I have seen the light! I thank you all for your advice.

Related question: are you able to taste things before you buy them at the deli counters here?

I don't usually shop at the supermarket deli counter, but if you go to a proper deli you can taste things! Mine always has dishes of pieces of various types of cheese sitting there for you to try out, or they'll give you a little sample of anything you ask for.

chicken is chicken, whether you are in the US or the UK.
so if you reheated chicken in the US... why not do it in the UK as well!?  :)

I was kind of   ??? that anyone would ask this question, but i googled it, and apparently you're not alone in wondering this!  :)  It would never have occurred to me that there was a problem with reheating chicken!
