My college had an escort service too.

I agree that, while you could find some things here, the price does tend to be expensive since it's imported. We do have a fairly good British section to our grocery stores around here in MA. Plus, there's an import store about 40 min. from me where we can get good back bacon. I'd definitely get the UK Cadbury as opposed to the US. Some of it you may find you don't miss as much as you thought. I found some salad cream for DB this summer (he had asked for it when he visited last year) and he still hasn't touched it.  :(

Good luck with the trip!

Thanks for your help and suggestions everyone :).

The pile of things to take with me is steadily growing. I now also have Jaffa Cakes, Creme Eggs, a large box of Roses (on offer) and three 250g Dairy Milk bars (one of which has the Crunchie bits). Also, today was my last day at work and my colleagues bought me a lovely going away gift... it included 4 bags of Thornton's Toffees/Sweets to pack in my suitcase :).

Definitely, lol! When I was little my parents decided that I was allergic to chocolate - it made me 'hyper' (damn those orange Smarties), so I was only allowed to eat chocolate once or twice a year (birthday/Christmas) and even then, I usually had to eat Milky Bars or Caramac :(. So I'm more than making up for that deprivation now :P.

Actually, I know that I like the majority of 'normal' (i.e. healthy, non-chocolate related) food there and that I can buy most everyday items when I get there, so my priorities for things to bring with me are treats that I can enjoy occasionally :). Plus, the food items I really want to take with me (local cheeses, Kingsmill bread, sausage rolls, milk etc.) will either go stale or be refused through customs.

My boyfriend would bring back loads of bread from England if he could! He thinks American bread is too sweet and small.

Most of what DB and I brought back from England was sweets and chocolate! I even like the taste of things like Kit Kats better over there.

Hello from Albuquerque! I have lived here for 14 years and I can assure you that the crime here is certainly no worse that what you'll find in any other medium-sized city. Of course, if you are a gang member or meth user, you may have a different experience! ;D

We do have more than one Wild Oats and Whole Foods and also a place called Sunflower Market which, I think, is local and sells natural/organic foods. You can also get a large variety of international foods at Cost Plus ( not sure how the prices are) which is on Menaul west of Carlisle. Albuquerque has grown a lot over the last several years and you should be able to find most anything you are looking for. I have a dear friend who grew up in Essex and now lives here and she may have more of an inside scoop on all things English in Abq. for you. You are welcome to PM for more info.

Good luck with your move. :)

mmm creme eggs. I'm jealous! Whenever we come back from India the tops of our hardback suitcases are literally layered with tomato flavored crisps. It's a totally yummy spicy taste I've just never seen here.

There are a lot of great artisan chocolatiers, you might find one in NM. They tend to dark rather than light chocolate, but as long as you stay away from Hershey's candy bars, things are good. (Last year they tried to classify their candy as chocolate even if it contained no chocolate... ugh).

Don't know if this is mentioned, but Trader Joes is fantastic, and I think they have stores in the Southwest. MUCH LESS expensive than Whole Foods.. or "Whole Paycheck" as it tends to be when I go in. I get most of my basic grocery staples at Trader Joes, and fruits/veg from farmers markets, suits my student budget well.

Yes, Trader Joe's is great. There is one here in ABQ, near Paseo del Norte and Wyoming. TJ's is far cheaper that the other stores I mentioned above but it's location is not very convenient, particularly if you don't have a car. :P

Okay, so it's less than 2 weeks until I move over to the US on my student visa and I'm trying to make a list of British things to take with me that I can't get hold of easily in the states (i.e. food stuff, toiletries etc.).

So far I have:

Food

Tea bags

Don't you know that as soon as tea crosses the US boarder it automatically becomes rubbish?  :D

Trader Joe's has crumpets, Blackthorn Cider, and Newcastle Brown Ale!   :)
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.
